I am trying to help a buddy build a tau version of the imperial bunker. What are the "rules" for counts as bunkers? Our debate is over size/ shape etc. Are people using the push light style tau bunkers? What are you saying about firing points, battlements, etc.?

Thanks for the help

The datasheet says it all. "as per model"

Thanks that was my argument.

For non-imperial, this is a cheap starting point for conversion.

With little work, you can add fireports and a door. Not the best photo, because they are upside down. But, they do come in various sizes and it's not hard to get something close enough to the right size that opponents won't cry.

I was going to link insaniaks handy guide to identifying non-imperial bastions, however, it seems that the site is down.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Luckily, the Bastion Identification guide is also a handy article right here on Dakka: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Identification_Please%21_-_Non-Imperial_Bastions_in_6th_Ed_40K

This seems like a good base for a Tau Bastion:

I find it curious that most people lean towards rounded towers for the Tau.

I think it's simply because that's how GW has pictured much of their terrain since the introduction of the Tau.

Slightly off-topic, but there's an excellent how-to for converting them into imperial buidings here:
http://www.ironhands.com/h2_gen0.htm
Some of the techniques are transferable to non-imperial as well.

If you want to be really accurate, for Tau, any circular building who's diameter is roughly the same as the distance between the opposite corners of an imperial bunker and whose hight is either as high, or high enough to be seen from anywhere on the table that could see an imperial bunker should be playable with no gripes by your opponent.

Of course most folks will probably be fine with rule-of-cool if you're creation is well-done and note built in-game advantage.

Fair enough that they where described with more rounded edges in a few books that I really should get around to reading, but the fluff also talks about how Tau do not build fortifications which also has to be considered when making a conversion. I, personally, find it more believable that the building in question would of instead been constructed by one of the Auxiliary races and those will follow completely different Building designs then those found on a sept world. It would even be more plausible to state that the building was 'seized' from the enemy and was the bait in a trap. However, that would be a little more difficult to set up as you would need to make a Bunker that fits all the other factions so you can swap it out for narrative purposes.
