Hello! I have always loved wargames, and back in the early 2000's me and my friends encountered 40k and played it for most of the decade. However, with closing of local sellers and loss of interest due to new (at the time) 4th edition along with interest in other games, we stopped playing all together. However, recently a GW store opened locally and I visited it for the first time; it brought back wonderful memories and now I know, whether my friends join me or not, I will have someone and somewhere to play... So I started to toss up the idea of rejoining the 40k ranks. I'm just a bit nervous though.

1. I love the look of well painted models, but have never been good at painting. I think I'd like to, for the first time really, try to learn how to really paint miniatures.

2. I don't wanna go back to the tyranids, I would like to try a new army. I was thinking Dark Eldar, mainly because of most of the local people I talk to, it seems to be very rare, and i love the way they look. However, I do not want to jump in with DE if they are not well supported. DE still viable right now (7th edition)?

2b. If not, then i like the look of Eldar (except main troop guys, those rifle gun things they have (shuriken catapults??) are ugly! lol. I am in love with the look of the Eldar War walkers though, man they are sleek. Oh and the Tau look cool as well. I just think they are pretty.

2c. Now gaming wise, I like an army that is not overpowered... what I mean by that is I actually have to think and use tactics to win as opposed to just running up and cutting down everyone around me. I like some close combat, but I want an army that has good skills at shooting and is mobile. I put this here because, besides looks, I have no idea what the strengths and weaknesses are of the different armies.

**Note: last time I played, it was 3rd edition. I'm not sure how things have changed or how good armies are at this or that.***

3. Since i'm not really interested in the two armies that come in the started box (currently space marines vs chaos space marines i think). What would be the best way to get started? should I buy the $85 rulebook? or just the army codex and some models and let someone at the game store teach me the rules? Anything else I should know before I return, if i return? lol.

I know this was silly post for a introduction. but I just didn't feel like putting in the other forums. Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

First off, welcome!

Second: You're gonna need the rules + codex to play. HOWEVER. If you're not feeling like spending the $85 on the BRB, go on ebay and look for the mini paperback rulebooks. They come in the starter set (and that recent package box called stormclaw), and they've gone from around 25-40 last time I checked. Still a somewhat hefty pricetag, but it's a lot more palatable than a $85 + 50 outset. Plus, I prefer the mini book. Less crap I have to carry to play haha.
