This is something I haven't seen mentioned anywhere elseIf you've got any of the plastic booster or starter boxes for Deadzone, look at what's written on the back at the bottom-right. In among the stuff about models supplied unpainted, etc, there are joke messages. Here are some:

Rebel faction starter: "No-one likes the coffee flavoured Rebels"

Rebel troop booster: "Apparently, you can't stop the signal"

Enforcer troop booster: "Accutek - for when you don't want something to be alive anymore" (or something like that - I haven't got the box anymore)

Plague Support box: "We didn't include the plague squirrel. We have mixed feelings about this."

Anyone care to share more...?

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

The original Deadzone battle zones terrain box says "And I miss you, like the deserts miss terrian".

On the starter box, the two player icon shows one guy with plague mutations.

I think Mantic has always done this. I remember the old KoW cases all had tiny text with non-sequiturs and funny quips.

"...and special thanks to Judgedoug!" - Alessio Cavatore "Now you've gone too far Doug! ... Too far... " - Rick Priestley "I've decided that I'd rather not have you as a member of TMP." - Editor, The Miniatures Page "I'd rather put my testicles through a mangle than spend any time gaming with you." - Richard, TooFatLardies "We need a Doug Craig in every store." - Warlord Games "Thank you for being here, Judge Doug!" - Adam Troke

They do. Someone started a thread on the main forum a while back suggesting more. I was blown away when I got an Ogre Regiment box and found my own suggestion on the back. "Box contains six plastic Ogre miniatures. Does not include talkative donkey."

The galaxy is littered with the single-planet graveyards of civilisations which made the economically sensible decision not to explore space.

I gotta go check mine. I've got faction starter boxes for marauders and rebs, and iron ancestors. I think they may have discontinued the quips temporarily during the WP boxen, but maybe not?

They stopped for a while, however a bunch of folk asks for them back.

Yeah. Mars attacks is like dz box, one player has a dome and slightly different shape. The marauders starter says something. Oh yeah! Do not use contents while going commando, or similar.

Loved that one. Reference to a song by 'Everything but the girl' if anyone didn't know.

Nice. As a KS backer, I only have the Starter box as far as original packaging goes, so I didn't notice. Plaid Hat Games do this with Summoner Wars and there's some amazing stuff in there. One card pack I bought said "Oh, hello. I see the assassins have failed."

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

A bit late to the party, but I figure with the apparent rate of traffic here, I'm not exactly digging up an old thread. I'm glad I found this thread, as I had never bothered to look carefully enough at my KoW boxes. I'll add:

Elves:
"Mantic Entertainment recommends its products for humans aged 10 and up, for Elves aged 55 and over and reminds all creatures (particularly Orcs) that plastic is not a food group."

Dwarfs (it's Dwarves, damn it!):
"Beware, Dwarfs are often closer than they may appear."
"The time of the Dwarfs is now. It's hammer time."

Undead:
"Evil spirits manifest..." (the dullest of the lot, IMO)
"Please try to retain all limbs. As demands of 'Gimme back my hand' are always ignored by Zombies."

The Dreadnote wrote:But the Emperor already has a shrine, in the form of your local Games Workshop. You honour him by sacrificing your money to the plastic effigies of his warriors. In time, your devotion will be rewarded with the gift of having even more effigies to worship.

Dwarfs - 'dwarves' was a linguistic construct by the good Mr. Tolkien. (Halfs becomes halves, calfs become calves, therefor with sufficient use dwarfs will become dwarves.)

Kilkrazy wrote:When I was a young boy all my wargames were narratively based because I played with my toy soldiers and vehicles without the use of any rules.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.
