Hey Folks, I've been playing deadlands 3000 recently...
http://deadlands3000.com/game.php?ACTION=REFER&i+NDAzMg==
…but know little about this kind of gaming.

And I'm wondering what other similar games might be out there. My criteria are:
-RPG or world building, or exploration or similar type. Open to most any genre or era.
-Free to play, and possible to advance reasonably without paying.
-Non, or limited PVP. I just like to play without looking over my shoulder.
-Browser based so I know it will work on my Mac

I'm not particularly concerned with the look of the game. Old school is fine if the game is good. I don't mind some of grinding.

Thanks!

The "no or limited PVP" is the part that is kind of difficult. Most browser games thrive off of having the players stab each other in the back.

The only browser game I've ever really enjoyed was called SlaveHack, but that doesn't really fit into the above criteria at all I am afraid. I haven't played that many though so someone else could probably give better advise.

Just saw the horribly pixellated Highwayman and Hummer from Fallout 2 and tactics in Deadlands screenshots, kinda laughed myself right off it.

At a glance its difficult to place any of the assets bar the 8 bit elements as not being taken from another source (namely the Fallout series, and oddly a Russian mod for one of the first ones). Huh, odd that, I thought Bethesda didn't tolerate the use of their assets outside of free mods for their own games (and hey, not mixing assets from one game with another). That and the art work's taken from elsewhere as well, though I can't place the source. Meh, not bashing a free game, just that I didn't see any credits for the assets on the main site (though that's without bothering to look too hard).

Any suggestions for the kind of games I'm looking for?

Criticism yes, uh suggestions, no. Well there is always Tv Tropes page on web games, but that's without my opinion of them. That said at least there you have an overview of the game's content (even if the list isn't exhaustive, but it is sorted by category at least). Looks like there's at least thirty games listed there (with related tropes pages), so I'd have a bash sifting through those (hey and at least you might find out something interesting in an entirely unrelated matter. ...Eugh, try not following trope chains).

I had quite a bit of fun with Jagged Alliance Online. Originally just wanted to take a quick look to gauge the creator's capabilities due to the Shadowrun Online kickstarter they were doing, but ended up playing it for several weeks.

It's not exactly an RPG, but you do get to create your own merc.

The only one I play is Avengers Alliance, which has a PvP system you can all but ignore. No real exploration though... just levelling up (and grinding!) new heroes.

Oh yeah, I know what they are. I'm pointing out that almost everything outside of the brown background's ripped from either Fallout: Tactics or Fallout 3. All it'd take'd be one message to Bethesda and they'd be down on that game in a heartbeat (ie like they've already done before, and why I'm surprised people try and abuse their copyright in other areas. ...Not referring to any of the sources of my Fallout minis of course. Love you Messy).

Isn't Card Hunter browser based? I've heard it's an awesome game it's just not my cup of tea.
