Can't decide! I'm 50/50! At the moment I'm planning on doing them both up as that's the only decision I can live with, although I'm sure my wife and wallet can't. Should I play one over the other, and if so, why? I have a good assortment of models for both and I am aware that SW just got a massive update. My problem lies in that I totally love the fluff and look of both armies. DA were my first real attempt at an army, so they hold a special place in my heart. I'm a huge Viking / Germanic aficionado, so I'm interested in SW by default.

Any of you folk play 2 marine armies?

Help!

What kind of play style do you prefer? CQC? Bikes? Drop Pods? That would help.

I personally run Dark Angels. I love the fluff and I am a fan of Death Wing deep strike and fast bike combat.

I personally prefer the DA fluff but there again I grew up on the Angels of Death Codex.

They both play very differently considering they are Both Space Marine Chapters.

I don't play two Marine armies now but you could run a Ravenwing army and then a Space Wolf one that way you have two very different approaches but both are still Marines.

Dark Angels, definitely. They've got much better fluff, and look way cooler!

I'm really biased, but I would say Space Wolves all the way. I have gotten into Norse mythology and Scandinavian history recently, and I have a Wolves army myself.

historically the two chapters were enemies, so build both armies and fight them against each other!

Firstly I have three space marine based armies (previously 4 but I sold all my chaos stuff) They are all much of a muchness at base level but beyond that they all have varying pros, and cons.

I love space wolves and all, and I have a small force but I'd pick Dark Angels every time.
One of my very first armies where DA way back when, and no matter how many times I've sold them on, I aways end up buying and putting together units again and again (especially Deathwing) The fluff is great, the schemes are beautiful, and there's a wealth of history to get inspired by when picking your forces.

From a purely custom kit bashed point of view, why not pick whenever codex works for you then make a sort of bastardised space marine chapter that is made up of both SW and DA kits. Give them a name, a history, whatever you like...I love doing that. However - Your wallet will not thank you

I'd say DA, but that's just because I like them a smidge more. I dig the visibly different sub-factions and I really dig the medieval look.

Really though, you have two great choices. You're going to get something great either way.

DA are cooler to me. SW aren't bad, I think look wise though, I've always dug DA more, plus their Bike based list are pretty cool.

Thanks for the replies! I really like the deep striking of the DA, and think the robed look is amazing. That being said, I also like the savage look and CC of the SW. I think what I might do is a list each for Terminator, standard SW, and Thunderwolves armies, and then a list for Deathwing, standard DA and Ravenwing. I could ally them under the new rules, or if something happens to GW, pit them against each other as that would work within the limits of fluff also.

Just can't decide where to start!

Wow! That's a great idea! An army with the DA fluff and rules but the look of the SW... Might actually look into that. An army like that would be acceptable to game with?

Just wait until we get the Angelus transport that shoots with Darklight cannons! Which transports Angelfury, a Dread with wings, that dualwields watchers of the dark wielding relic angely weapons.

If you use the DA codex as a foundation then absolutely it would be a legal army. It's when you start inventing rules, stat lines, point values and so on that it's not legal. But there's nothing stopping anyone from completely inventing the look, fluff, and characters of an army as long as a legal codex is the foundation.
It will be fun also trying to invent a back story for a DA chapter that are covered in fur, and bones! If you really want to go to town, then kit bash the two armies, and use files to rub down any SW iconography, and if you're feeling source pick up some of the force world weapons to add some real unique flavour

If you do upload some photos in the future!

Space wolves as theres nothing cooler than marines riding huge wolves weilding huge hammers
besides all that they're fun to paint and convert I would suggest that you get a few models from each army and see which one you prefer

Yeah, drunken Wikingers are cool.

I'd opt for SW. Don't go overboard with TWC, very expensive and not so hard to kill up to the Wolf Lord.
I'd go for spamming Grey Hunters in Drop Pods.

I don't understand the question.

Back in the day, we were epic Space Vikings with horns, and beer, and stupid mockney accents, and we didn't have any truck with this flying around like a pansy shizzle. We certainly didn't surround ourselves with mangy animals.

Now we're basically the Bestiality Chapter.

We also now ride chariots and employ daemonic dreadnoughts...also, we fly and teleport with abandon. With wolves.

Depends. If you take issue with endless mocking of your army no matter what then go Dark Angels. If not go Space Wolves.

Play whatever chapter you like the look and fluff of - or make your own. Use whichever flavour of space marine rules you like with them. You like Ultramarines but really want to run crusader squads? No problem, use black templar chapter tactics. Love blood angels but want to play space wolves rules? Go for it!

I play Blood Ravens, using bits from a lot of SM kits (mainly blood angels). I've run them with every SM codex depending on how I feel like playing. So long as the models are WYSIWYG it's fine - magnetising special weapons and so on helps a lot. So long as you can tell them apart easily enough, you can run two chapters in the same army thanks to allies which I've done too - I used my veterans (bone coloured helms) as a second chapter. Was trying to squeeze out as many librarians as I could ; p

They were never enemies.

In answer to the question go with what you like the most. I have 2 separate marine armies, Howling Griffons and Dark Angels

Would you prefer:

A chapter defined by age old struggle to prove themselves after they were sundered by traitors to Chaos, which actually has meaningful fluff filled with internal strife,

or

A chapter of wolfy wolves filled with murderlust who can't wait to sink their wolf murderfangs and wolf murderclaws into you, because you aren't wolfy enough to get along with the murderous wolfy wolves of the wolf chapter?

The best part about space marines is custom chapters. There are hundreds of chapters without rules, and for all we know there are hundreds more lost in the warp (or wherever) People used to use the space wolves codex with their chaos marines.

Do it big man, and when you have your robed savage warriors, post them, because I would love to see them!

Dark Angels.

The new SW units are awful and they're becoming/are a caricature of themselves.

I'd look at the new SW Codex and see if you like the rules for them, and then decide.

Personally, I'll take the Unforgiven over the Wolves any day.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

I personally prefer DA. I like the idea of the SW, but their color scheme just rubs me wrong. I'd run them black or as a really dark blue. Plus, the DA fluff is just awesome and I love their look.

No, but they are fierce rivals. In 6th, they would ally, but you had to nominate one guy from each unit to fight a challenge to simulate the original fight between primarchs that started everything.
