Wherever they tell me

Afternoon everyone,

I was wondering how common it was for people to come up with new ships? I know the Star Wars fluff is pretty well established and that there are a ton of ships already out there; however, I have a habit of trying to make new things in games I play.

Basically, I'm thinking of a rebel version of the Starcraft Wraith. I'd call it the T-Wing and it would be a 3-3-2-2 craft with Focus, Target Lock, Boost, and Cloak.

As for Pilots:
PS 1 - Apprentice Pilot
PS 4 - Assassin Squadron Pilot
PS 5 - Named Pilot 1 - Large Ships are -1 Agility when in his firing arc and within range
PS 7 - Named Pilot 2 - Can only be stressed by executing Red Maneuvers

This leaves me with a few questions:
1. Is there a ship already in the Star Wars fluff that is similar to this that might make an appearance?
2. How should I cost this ship if I wanted to play it in friendly games?
3. Where the heck can I find/learn how to make a Wraith model at this scale? My idea is to cannibalize a B-Wing and get creative with some green stuff.

I often find that "home-made" rules crosses the nebulous and invisible line from balanced into fan-spank.

For instance this ship would have 5 defense dice when cloaked. I would be very careful about that.

That is something that I thought about, and my goal was to balance it with the E-Wing and Phantom power level. So I started with the lower of their stats, but leaving agility at 3 due to it not having access to the advanced cloaking device or the evade action.

5 dice does seem pretty steep though, maybe dropping its shields completely might be the best compensation. That would make it so things like bombs or lucky shots have a fair chance at seriously damaging it. It also makes it a prime target for gunner crew and the munitions failsafe upgrades because it allows for rerolls on misses.

Seems to me you could probably build it with the cockpit & hull of a B-wing with shortened main wing, cockpit attached to front of hull & cut the guns off the winglets & attach X-Wing wings at an angle?

I've never seen anyone play against fan ships. I suppose someone out there might be willing to, but I wouldn't count on it.

As for your design, it's probably not too unreasonable. You're trading the phantom's 4-dice primary for an extra green die, and that's a trade that is overwhelmingly against your new ship. On the other hand you're adding an engine upgrade that doesn't take up the modification slot (very important on a ship that always takes a cloak mod). But since the advanced cloak is phantom-only you're stuck with the weaker mod and you can't duplicate the phantom's ability to shoot every turn while flying circles around PTL interceptors. I'd start at the same cost as the phantom and playtest until you figure out which direction to go in. The advantages and disadvantages compared to the phantom aren't straightforward numbers (like adding or subtracting dice/HP), so the only way to know how much it's worth is to playtest it and find out.

The named pilots, on the other hand, are clearly broken. The PS 5 version is borderline useless since large ships are already easy to hit, while the PS 7 one is utterly broken unless you don't give it an EPT or access to any stress-causing upgrades. With an EPT you're using PTL to take two actions every turn without any penalty, and there's a reason Vader is still a reasonably good choice despite being stuck in the clear worst ship in the game.

For instance this ship would have 5 defense dice when cloaked. I would be very careful about that.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. You can't shoot and recloak, and green dice are much worse than red dice. This thing would probably be a lot easier to kill than a phantom, and won't do as much damage before it dies.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
