Hi, I've just started playing 40k and would consider myself a total newbie to the game. I've come up with a list which I like the look of but have no clue how good it is/isn't .
And feedback and suggestions would be great.
So here it is......
HQ
Grukk Face Rippa
Boss Zagstrukk
Big Mek a/kustom force field
Troops
30 ork boyz w/shootas
Fast attack
30 stormboyz
1 blitza bomber w/red paint job
Elites
10 nobz w/trukk
Heavy
1 mek gun w/ traktor cannon +2 additional gretchin and ammo runt
1 mek gun w/kustom mega cannon +2 additional gretchin and ammo runt
I'm think that's it, comes to just under 1200pts. I mainly play against tyranids which is the main reason for the traktor cannon. But apart from that I'm clueless on how to set up the rest, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Well first of all it is not a legal list.
For a standard CAD you can only have 2 HQ's, 3 Elites, 6 Troops, 3 Fast and 3 Heavy. With a minimum 1 HQ and 2 Troops. You don't have 2 Troops and you have 3 HQ's. If you are using the Horde detachment in the Ork Codex then you would need 3 Troops.
I would suggest at least 2/20 boys squad. You don't have any wargear on your Nobs squad. You want at least one Power Klaw and one Boss Pole in the squad. Where are your HQ going? Obviously Zag is going with the Stormboys, but what about the other two? Of course you will have to drop one unless you do the Horde Detachment.
To be honest you are kind of all over the place. There is no synergy with what you have. 1 Mek gun isn't going to do much. If you want to deal with Flying Monstrous creatures then you might want at least two Traktor Kannons.
Back to the drawing board for you. Good luck!

Ah right shows how's rubbish I am and building lists.
Ok how about this one.....
HQ
Grukk Face Rippa
Boss Zagstrukk
Troops
20 boyz w/shootas (grukk goes here)
20 boys w/sluggas and boss nob w/boss pole
Fast
30 stormboyz (boss Zagstrukk goes here)
1 blitza bomber
Elites
10 nobz and boss nob w/PK and boss pole on trukk
Heavy
1 mek gun w/traktor cannon +2 additional gretchin and ammo runt
1 mek gun w/traktor cannon +2 additional gretchin and ammo runt
I've not built half the models yet so am pretty flexible with what I can have. Hopefully this is better.

I think Grukk would be better with the Sluggas over the shootas. Combine the two Mek guns into one squad.
Find room to put a Nob in with the Stormboys as well with a PK. Having a Power Klaw in the squad will be nice. I personally like the Dakka jet better. but that is of course your choice.
Hope this helps.

That's a huge help thanks. Is the reason for grukk being with the sluggas because of the feel no pain rule to help them survive to get in range to attack?
Will go with the Dakka jet then as it will also give me a few more points to use for upgrades
Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated

I honestly don't know what he does. I don't have the rules on him.
Sluggas want CC, Shootas are better to receive an assault. At least in my eyes. I play nothing but shooty Orks. So I tend to not get into Combat as much as possible.

Not sure how Grukk is built, but he sure looks like a CC machine, so I'd guess putting him with sluggas is best. Both he and Zag let you reroll leadership, which is pretty key.
Your nobz might be more effective as a unit of 6 or 7, all with armor and big choppas, rather than 9 naked and 1 PK.
Really wish I had enough stormboyz to field a full 30, I bet that looks mighty mean on the battlefield. I hope they survive turn one!

Yeah I've just read grukks stats and he does seem more CC. Thanks for the advice on the nobz, I will give that a go.

Don't underestimate bare Nobs. That would be 46 Str 5 attacks on a charge and 4 str 9 attacks with the PK.
Nobs end up being to many points if you start adding things to them. Keeping them bare helps add models and still makes them very effective. He is playing a small point game as is so 10 bare Nobs is really all he needs.

I'd go with 2 smaller nob squads rather than 1 big. 10 nobz in a 10-10-10 huge opentopped vehicle = 8 pinned nobz in a crater next turn. Btw, meganobz are almost alwayz better this way but if you just have nobz...

I have 3 mega nobz as well, I could put them in the trukk instead, would that be a better option?

3 meganobz in a trukk is classic ! I always go with that you want a boss pole on non character meganob so if youl lose some chalange you still have chance to reroll Ld . If your opponent plays many small nids throw comby scorchaz in that squad. Put face rippa in a unit of slugas and also put a nob in there , nob can be naked he's there to take chalange so warboss can swing with his Pk! If you have Bw put shuta boyz in it , also nob with pk and bp in that squad can be very useful!

I advice more trukks. Only one will focus all fire on him.
Having 2-3 will allow you to throw more greens in your opponents first lines at T2.
Otherwise, everything footslogging.
