After realizing my fledgling Ork horde had very little character, I decided that it needed a more clear, defined concept. I could make them all a classic clan, but I wasn't feeling classic. I could make my own clan, but I wasn't feeling inspired. Then it hit me! What brings Orks together from all WAAAAAGHlks of life? Fungus beer! I'm going to make some drunk orks.

If you're into that sort of thing, here is the backstory I wrote up for my army of drunk orks, The Bog Rok Boyz. If you want to skip that nonsense, pictures start below!
Spoiler:

Planet: Bog Rok
Bog Rok is, for an Ork world, a relatively idyllic and peaceful paradise. It's massive marshes and swamps are a perfect sporing ground for orky fungi, and bizarre flora and fauna swarm over its surface of ankle deep mud. With next to no natural resources, and a rather unpleasant odor, Bog Rok has no tactical importance for any other race, meaning that, unless a Tyranid hive fleet shows up, it is unlikely to be invaded by anyone.

However, Bok Rok is of extreme importance to Ork civilization: it is located on a major warpdrive lane en route to Armageddon, the WAAAGH! that every Ork dreams of joining. As such, it is a hub of Ork Kultur, as greenskins from across the galaxy pass through on their way to Da Big Fight. This provides a huge customer base for Bog Rok's major export: the finest fungus beer in the galaxy, known to discerning Ork konnoisseurs as Bog Grog. Bog Grog is a corrosive blend of swamp water, squig excretions, and rokkit fuel (indeed, in a pinch it can be substituted for the latter). Many a Warboss demands a pit stop at Bog Rok to pick up a few tanks full of Bog Grog to steady his shooting hand. Legendary warboss Ghazghkul Mag Uruk Thrakka is known to have a fondness for Bog Grog, and many a cunning Ork upstart has attempted to enter His Krumpingness' good graces by bringing him veritable lakes of the beverage.

To feed the numberless drunken hordes, Bog Rok has developed a massive squig population. Squiggly Beasts of all shapes and sizes scurry, lumber and hop through its marshes. The Gretchen who tend the Squigs have excitedly gathered samples from visiting Klans, and now boast that Bog Rok is home to the largest variety of Squigs in the galaxy, including several unique varieties they have bred themselves!

Meeting with so many diverse warbands, Orks visiting Bog Rok also have an opportunity to compare killing techniques with their contemporaries. This enhances Bog Rok's other distinguishing feature: the entire planet is engulfed in an enormous, unending bar brawl. Occasionally, after a week of particularly heavy drinking, a group of Orks may find themselves engaged in battle on a totally different planet, unaware of why or how they got there. Still, for an ork this raises very few problems: krump 'em right good, then head back to the Rok for another round!

One especially infamous band of Orkish hooligans is known as Rotgut's Rabble. Legends say that the Warboss now known as Rotgut first arrived on Bog Rok centuries ago, a promising leader with dreams of conquest. However, his decision to stop off for "one quick drink!" proved fateful, and he has never been able to pull himself away from the bottle (or keg, or stein, he's not picky). Now Rotgut leads his Rabble on massive blood and booze binges, known as "Krawls", that weave through a half dozen worlds across multiple systems before staggering back to the Rok before they can sober up.

The consumption of Bog Grog also seems to unlock a Boyz dormant psychic potential, generating a surprising number of Wierdboyz. Though their behavior is not much stranger than that of any other drunken Ork, the Wierdboyz can be easily identified by the gouts of green flame and lightning that they spit across the bar, as opposed to the grog and squig-bits vomited out by their mates. The massive surges in gestalt psychic power emitted by the Orkish bar brawl often leads to highly unpredictable manifestations. One Wierdboy in particular, named Whizzbang, has a penchant for getting so excited that he teleports himself and all Orks around him into fights on whole other planets, drawn in by the excitement of battle from light years away. As such, Whizzbang is a much sought-after drinking companion.

Despite the presence of personalities like Rotgut and Whizzbang, Bog Rok is an oddity among Ork worlds, in that the larger greenskins are all in such a perpetual state of inebriation that real leadership and power has been de-facto ceded to the smaller Gretchen. Naturally brighter than Orks, and with bowels unable to withstand an onslaught of Bog Grog, sobriety has given an edge to the Gretchins of Bog Rok, and they guide and manipulate their larger cousins through delicate application of booze and suggestion. Chief among this Gretchen shadow government (or Da Guv, as those few Orks aware of its existence have taken to calling it. It is a new concept for them, and they needed a new word) is Brewmaster Snotscrew. It was Snotscrew's predecessors as Gretchen Brewmasters who discovered that the golden rule of Ork society, "I'z da biggest so I'z da boss" could be circumvented by giving the largest Ork around free booze, and then telling him what to do once he was good and smashed. Another enterprising Gretchen has discovered a different way around the rule, by crafting himself a massive Ork costume out of scrap metal and styling himself Warboss Eizenork (after being asked "oi, oo iz you?" and replying "I'z an Ork!"). Normally this ruse would not pass muster, but the Orks of Bog Rok are too drunk to notice that the massive boss giving them orders is a runt in a suit. Thus have the lowly Gretchen maintained their loose and clammy-palmed grip on Bog Rok.

So, I imagine that my Orks have just stumbled out of some Orky space-tavern, and onto the battlefield, with steins of Fungus Beer still in hand. To make the steins, I took a short length of plasticard tube, and used green stuff to make it thicker/wider at the bottom. Then, cut weapons out of the ork's hand, but more green stuff to attach the stein to the weapon handle, and maybe a bit more again to be some grog pouring out!

It's nothing too fancy, but the beauty of Orks is that poor sculpting ability kinda plays right into their aesthetic! The open mouthed ork head is from some fantasy boar boyz.

With some base paint and a first quick wash, it actually looks pretty slick:

And these one's I put some trial colors on:

To mix it up a bit, I gave some of them other props- a bar stool (I had just seen World's End) and a beer helmet for the flagbearer (poor guy had his hands full)

These two put their beers down, but are still stumbling around and off-balance

I found a fantasy hook-hand, and couldn't resist making Old Two-Handz here (2nd hand is on his shield). His buddy is frothing at the mouth.

But now I'm running out of ideas. These two here are kind of... lacking. Though I like to think the one on the right is totally sober, and looking behind him to see what the fuss is all about.

So! I already have more than enough for a full trukk, but I've got work to do if I want a full unit of 30 Bog Grog Boyz, and LOTS of work if I want a whole drunk army (Da Krawl!). I'm working on getting a hammered nob to lead them, along with fleshing out other interesting personalities from the backstory. Will update when I've made some more progress. I'd love some suggestions about more things for drunk orks to be wielding, and thoughts on colorschemes! At the moment, I'm thinking a kind of mushroomy-white for shirts, puke-yellow/brown for metals, and purple for highlights. But with green skin, purple might end up making them look a bit too much like a Batman villain...

Someone showcased a similiarly themed orc army for fantasy fairly recently. If you can find that should be a good source of extra inspiration.

Looking forward to actually seeing your pics!

Figured it out! I was posting script from the wrong little box, but now my pictures are working!

Working on a nob to be Rotgut, the eponymous leader of Rotgut's Rabble:

He's SUPPOSED to be holding that barrel sitting next to him. I've shaped his PK so it grips it nicely, everything is fine...
EXCEPT of course that the barrel is made of resin, so I need a different glue to make it work. Also, my paint seems to be rubbing off the barrel. After some quick searches, I learn that you often need to scrub down resin models with dish soap. Huh. Ok. Will give that a try, get some all-purpose super glue, and see if I can get him up and drinking soon!

Every good army needs a warboss. Yes, okay, some WAAAAGH's are led by Big Meks, but this is a safe space and we can be honest with each other: no one REALLY trusts a Big Mek. They're just too shifty.

I've got an AOBR warboss. He's okay. He's got a decaying paintjob from back before I new what a wash was, and isn't terribly personalized. I haven't even named him. Sad. So I've been searching the interweb for inspiration in making a truly EPIC warboss.

I found this guy, who is almost certainly my favorite Ork model I have ever seen: http://www.the-warforge.com/?cat=17 . I am in love with this model. It's just raw, ferocious Ork. I want a Warboss that has that same feeling of action! So I went Bitz-shopping and picked myself up a Skaven rat-ogre from the Screaming Bell set. He's a little hairy, and only has three fingers.... but I think he'll be the perfect base model for my conversion. Only trouble is the head, will nob heads be big enough? Is my warboss head suitable? ...but I'll burn that bridge when I come to it... or something.

So stay tuned! Exciting things to come!

And as a reward for enduring my ramblings- three more drunk orks, in various stages of completion!

...That's what enormous, angry Orks are made of.

My bitz arrived! And I'm very pleased. The rat-ogre who will become my super-angry Warboss is still covered in hair... but between my xacto knife and sandpaper, that should be gone soon. I'm hacking apart an AOBR warboss for his face, shoes, and gun, and that's worked well. And I have some killa kan shoulder platers, just to make him look like a boss. Because he is.

Here's a preliminary work in progress. I'm gonna put some huge angry blade or hook or something on the end of the chain splattered with blood, with an action pose like he's whirling it around wildly. I think it will look awesome.

Unfortunately, I really should finish this paper before I get too deep into this project....

Thanks! Yeah, I've got a full 30 boyz modeled now, so batch painting can start... I'm just nervous! I don't have enough faith in my painting skills It will happen though, when I have less real life stuff on my plate and build up my nerve a little more!

Some quick photo updates on my warboss! I'm really excited about him- all of his skaven-y bits are gone and he's looking like a thoroughbred ork!

He just needs his gun-hand attached.

And as an added bonus, the chain makes for easy storage! (Oops! Sideways...)

There's one big question left: what vicious weapon does he have on the end of that chain? This is where I'm a little stuck. I thought about a big 'ole wrecking ball, as though he were an enormous Goblin Fanatic, but I don't think the chain would support something that heavy... I thought about a curved blade like some kind of pendulous Indiana Jones trap, I thought about a hook like Pudge or Thresh (pick your MOBA), or maybe a circular saw blade like a Killa Kan cc weapon. I'm really not sure, and I'd love some input. I want him to stay looking intimidating, but keep that Over-the-top orkiness.

Then, after he's done, paint!

It's been a little while, but I've finally put paint on something and it looks pretty snappy. I present my first scratch built warboss!

I wanted him to embody what I love about orks- enormous, green, and overly enthusiastic. I feel he covers the bases pretty well (just don't count his fingers!).

To recap a bit from his WIP post, he's build out of a hacked apart AOBR warboss, combined with a hacked apart Skaven Rat-Ogre and just a dash of Killa-Kan armor. Seasoned with green stuff and plasticard to taste.

I'm really pleased about how his green stuff back muscles turned out- it's the most sculpting-heavy project I've attempted. My girlfriend politely ignored the dozen or so images of male bodybuilders I was using as reference. Got to stay open minded!

I was so caught up with the awesomeness of the chain, I didn't think about what it would count as. It certainly LOOKS more like a big choppa than a PK (if that) but if he were swigning it around fast enough... I'm sure folks would let it slide.

He does need a name still.... I was thinking like Gorefiend da Thrasha. Or, Something da Thrasha, anyway. I'll keep thinking, but let me know if you have any ideas. And of course he needs basing, but that's another can of worms I haven't even begun to open yet.

Thanks for checking him out!

Thanks for the comments, guys! And for the ideas- beer ads on killa kans is gold! I have some old kan conversions from way back in the day- maybe Bog Grog Inc. could sponsor a refurbishing... "9/10 Warbosses agree- for a zogging good time, drink Bog Grog!"

Anyway, back to the task at hand. With all these drunk orks, who is left to run the show? Da grots of course!

I present the humble beginnings of Warboss Eizenork. Or to give his full title, Warboss Eizenork Most Definitely an Ork and I'll Krump Anyuv You's Oo Sayz Udderwise.
He is, of course, a Gretchen in an Ork suit.

I took a lot of inspiration from the hulking, gorrilla-like posture of this Deff Dread conversion by His Master's Voice: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/125318-.html It's totally brilliant, you should check it out, but I won't put the picture here lest folks get confused and think its mine.

Here's where I started:

It's kind of a boxy, thrown together torso (happily, an aesthetic that works for orks). I had just gotten this round plasticard tubing, so I was really excited to put "pistons" everywhere. I also really enjoy the spring-suspension spine, I think it gives a lot of character.

Attaching the arm, he really takes on that hulking posture.

Then we add the pilot! The brains behind the ork, more literally than usual. I cut off the top of his hat and gave him a little squishy brain with copper wires coming out. The lever he's holding is part of a stikkbomb, from that gretchen who holds a stikkbomb.

Then he needed a gun arm. Again, I had lots of fun with tubing to make something good and huge.

He's beginning to look intimidating!

He's come a little way since this- lots of extra armor plates and rivets (I recently discovered that rivets make everything beautiful) going on, I'll post more updates soon.

That is exactly what I was going for

So, I've finished my MA, I am now a Master of International Peace and Conflict Resolution. Which, clearly, means it is time to focus on what really matters: tabletop combat.

As you can see, Warboss Eizenork has been painted up! And based too! The basing is pretty simple- just a purple swampy effect, but I'm pleased. Photos are brutal, I can see all the places where my paintbrush didn't reach, so I'm gonna have to go back and touch up, later. Still, I'm very pleased.

Not only is he so huge that he needs Killa Kan shoulder guards, he actually uses two of them per shoulder. Bananas.

The grot aiming over the powerklaw is actually adding to the structural integrity of the model- the megarmor was so large that the klaw couldn't fit on the base, so the grot is glued to on to stop it wiggling.

I figure the banners are from other warbosses who figured out Eizenork's dirty little secret... so he krumped them, and now displays their skulls.

I even got to test him out, about a month ago now, against my buddy's Deathwing terminators (more of a fun fluff list than a competitive one, but still!). Over the course of the game he accepted challenges from both Belial and Azrael... and squished both. I'm very proud.

Some of my drunken slugga boyz also got painted! I had experimented with a few color schemes, and in the end I took what had been working on my chain-wielding boss and translated it to the rest of the army. Orange shirts and highlights, a corroded, yellow-brown metal, blue pants, brown leather, and some silver metal here and there.

I'm most pleased with the skin tone- I've seen a lot of really grungy, dark green orks, but I'm really not into that. I wanted them a nice, bright, almost radioactive green. It's a little muted by the brown wash, but still good.

Man, if I were painting marines, I'd practically have a full squad by now! Sigh... But I would also be bored out of my mind. Ork hordes may be painfully large, but they are lots of fun.

Oh, and thanks for the comments, everyone! They'll keep me encouraged as I'm trying to paint the orange shirt on the 15th ork in a row....
