Inquisition = a lot of psychic synergy
Astra Militarum = more bodies, and excellent ranged fire power

Which is a compliment for the Grey Knights to make them stronger? Am I missing anything? Thanks!

Usually AM will help grey knights more as they lack both bodies and backfield scoring units.

Fluff wise though, inquisition is the proper choice.

fluff wise you could go with an inqusitor and a AT force painted up as Inqusitionarial storm troopers

As it stands, I'll drop the idea to run GK with an Inquisitional force.
I'll take either vanilla Space Marines or Dark Angels since I have both armies at hand.

If you do go for IG allies, what do you use them for? Do you get melta-vet squads? Blobs? Or some armor?

I would say it depends on how many points you have open.

Since Inquis awrbands contain 3-12 models, this would be ideal for low point games. As you could get bodies if you need them (4pts acolyte with a 1pt boltgun) or go a little bit fancier. But overall with Inquisition you are not going to be putting a good chunk of points in if they are allied with an army that is model-restrictive as GK.

On the other side with IG/AM, you can spend points and get a good number of modes that have exactly what you need an even something like an artillery battery or Leman Russ Squadron if you want. You could spend 150pts and get 50-model units or you could spend 90pts on 6 models that get 3 str8 ap2 large blasts and anything in between.

A unit of 50 conscripts is 150pts. You can get a special weapon team of 6 and give 3 of them demolition charges for 90pts.
