Subject: iGuy goes to the NOVA Open GT (Game 2 Complete)
Hello hello!
Its been a long long while since I wrote a battle report.
So obviously as the title would say, I will be attending this year's NOVA Open GT, and I will be bringing my air-cav crons to try my hand at this "Competitive Play" thing.
This is my first GT. I'm ready, eager, and have a lot of dice to roll!
I will be posting the reports on this thread as I have time to write them, a lot like JY2 is handling his BAO reports.
My list 1850 pts Necrons.

Is your list set in stone? Are you still able to/willing to make changes to your list? I think it can be improved upon just by adding some crypteks to it (namely, the haywire ones). Because believe me, you will need them for all of those Imperial Knights that you are going to see.

Hrm......I won't say no to changing it, nothing is set in stone. Juggling the points could be tricky though
If I take out the destroyer lord, get a bargelord, lose a flier, and drop several immortals, I should be able to afford a few stormteks?

I wouldn't worry about IK that much. Your wraiths will do suprisingly well vs them. Drop in a 10 man Immortal squad strip some HP off then charge with wraiths and you will kill it in one turn. Does Whip Coil work vs IK? If so even better.
I like the list my biggest complaint is one squad isn't a lot of obj grabbing. Be interesting to see how you do though.

I've got 35 objective-secured troops Incognito, and all of my army can score otherwise, so I'm not too concerned about objectives.
I don't plan on just dropping off immortals like a lot of people try to with x5 warrior squads last turn to cheese-grab objectives, granted, i have one for just such a purpose.
I'm going to use mine to blow away other troop choices, and seize the objectives the enemy once held. If the ride gets shot down, they walk in from the board edge, and claim objectives that way.

I am surprised you aren't using the self ally option that NoVa alllows. Probably too late to adjust but a 4th anni barge and the requisit HQ would be fairly easy to find points for by reducing those 10man immortals. Then make the 2nd HQ warlord and bury him somewhere, that D-lord is bound to die.
Storm tek is also a good idea.
But hey this is a batrep thread, regardless I say god luck and good speed in all your games. Look forward to the batreps

I'll be wearing the Superman shirts with the White Tau, say hi and maybe we'll be opponents.
(Totally off topic)
Doh! Why is it that I finally come up with a paint scheme for my Tau and I find tones of people already doing it. I want to go with a white and grey winter warfare look. I was also thinking about blue highlights. Hmm, now it will feel awkward...
(back on topic)
Goo luck, my son likes necrons so I hope it goes well. I will be looking forward to a battle report.

Well! One day down, and I will say, my quest for a challenge has been answered. I've played Summoning FMC Demons featuring TWO Greater Unclean Ones, and Two FMC Nurgle Princes Deldar Double Beast Star, featuring a whopping 40 Kymerae from Team Quality Control and a mixed Tau list w x1 riptide, and the fire support broadside formation from Team Stomping Grounds.
That being said, I've been surprised by the strong experience advantage some of my opponents have had, and I'd safely say the results of ALL my games came down to few hot/cold dice rolls.
I also enjoyed meeting Recius (elbow buump), ArbitorIan, Zagman and Hulksmash! I'll post army pics tomorrow. Three games in a day has wiped me out hard.

Pre-Game Analysis
Hrm. That is a lot of Monstrous Creatures. I tend to find that my armies struggle against such lists. I'm definitely going to need to head hunt those pink horrors to reduce his warp charges/turn, and I will need fire power early. As such, I would choose to take my Tesla immortals and a unit of guass immortals and deploy them at game start, and I need to kill the princes so he cannot contest late. I have the fliers available to put down a lot of fire on their heads. Its time to make good use of them! On the other hand, my opponent needs to reach critical mass using his summoning powers, and swamp the board, using his princes aggressively to box me into my deployment zone. Here goes nothing!
Deployment
Spoiler:
Demon Deployment Note: Warlord GUO is the tall one.
Necron Deplooyment I refuse a flank, and load up on the far right with the barges, wraiths, and tesla immortals on an objective in ruins, a unit of gauss immortals on the other flank in cover, I'm hoping to draw his big guys away from his objectives, so I can drop-snipe his troops.
He attempts to seize, and fails.
Necrons Turn 1
Spoiler:
I move up to line up shots on his demon prince in front of his pink horrors. I continue to refuse my flank to him.
I fire everything I have at the prince, and drop him. Arcing deals a few wounds to the horrors. Too bad he wasn't the one with iron arm.... Still thats one down
Wraiths shuffle back a little to gain distance from the MCs, and my turn ends.
Deamons Turn 1
Spoiler:
He begins to pull his pink horrors back, and moves his MC's towards my lines, his prince in the middle successfully casts Iron Arm on himself, and glides right at my lines, both of his units of pink horrors summons a unit of 5 hounds of khorne.
The two GUOs use the LOS blocking cover to start rotating to where my black-claw wraiths are, to try and cut me off from his troops. His shooting from the prince results on a wound on my wraiths, but the rest of his shooting is without effect. He attempts a charge on the wraiths, but fails by a few inches, due to my shuffle backwards with my run.
Necrons Turn 2
Spoiler:
Well first turn went well, lets see what I can't do to build on that. I roll for reserves, and my two empty night scythes, and my night scythe with my warriors all come in. Two of them go after his marked pink horrors, and one lines up his exposed prince. I shift my army to shoot his iron arm prince. Which in retrospect may have been a mistake. One unit of wraiths, without the destroyer lord move up to assault the prince, the other advances on his summoned hounds, which are between me and his troops. With luck, I can wipe them in assault, and consolidate away from the approaching GUO.
Shooting against the iron arm prince is utterly ineffective between a 2+ cover and T9, netting a wound. However, my shooting is very effective in other areas, reducing my target pink horrors to 4 models, and wiping out the hounds of khorne unit (oops) With my wraiths exposed, I attempt to run them, and they move a whole inch. They are sitting ducks for that GUO to charge. (Another Mistake on my part, I could have just charged the GUO instead of sitting there.)
In assault, I make another mistake, as my bronze claw wraiths charge the Iron Arm Price, and make it into assault. He is whip coiled, and I attempt in vain to hurt him.
Daemons Turn 2
Spoiler:
His unengaged price flies up the flank, and will be in range to fight next turn. His GUO moves to 1 inch away from my wraiths. His other GUO (Warlord, Moves to support him.) His horrors run behind the cover in the middle of the board. His remaining unit of hounds makes a b-line for my gauss immortals.
In the psychic phase, he casts Iron Arm on his engaged Prince again, and would do so for the rest of the game. He summoned a large unit of pink horrors to claim an objective near the middle. His GUO attempts to enfeeble my warlord and wraiths, and passes with a perils, rolls a 1 on the table, and fails his LD test, and is removed from play. Now you see him Now you don't
The assault with the demon prince continues with no end in sight, as we fail to land a wound that sticks on one another.
Necron Turn 3
Spoiler:
I apologize for the lack of pictures this turn.
My other flyer with immortals does not come on from reserves unfortunately, even with the re-roll. My other scythes go after his pink horror squads. My warlord and wraiths line up his warlord for a short assault. Meanwhile, my barges shift to put fire on a deamon prince landing nearby them. My immortals move around to claim an objective to prevent him from accumulating more on his turn.
My shooting against the flying prince nets a wound in a fit of cold dice. My night scythes and a barge combine to finish off the pink horrors i'd marked for death. My other night scythe, for the moment, shoots the other unit of pink horrors off their home objective.
In assault, his engaged iron arm demon prince crushes two wraiths. My wraiths and Warlord charge into the GUO, hoping to net a kill before anything can come to support.
Daemon Turn 3
Spoiler:
He moves his demon prince into range to attack my barges or immortals. Khorne hounds advance on my immortals.
He summons another unit of pink horrors, realizing he is falling behind in objective points. His prince continues to iron arm itself, much to my chargrin.
His demon prince fires a str 6 armorbane flamer on all 3 barges, netting two glances after swooping, At least he can't asault one. Pink Horrors shuffle into cover.
In a setback, his hounds assault my immortals
And I pass a lot of armor saves, immortals hold, and the hounds take two wounds, and fail their demonic instability test, disappearing from the board, my immortals consolidate back, and line up the demon prince behind them.
Meanwhile, that pesky iron arm prince kills off the last wraith tying him up as my 3+ invulns start failing. I put a wound through on his warlord, and combat keeps grinding on.
Necron Turn 4
Spoiler:
My night scythes fly back on to the table to take out the price about to wreack havoc on my lines, another lines up his pink horors. My immortals line up the non-iron arm prince. My barges move away from the iron arm prince, and spread out. On the other flank, my immortals press onto the objective, and aim to finish off his damaged pink horror squad. with the help of a night scythe.
Shooting is fruitful, as the three barges and 2 night scythes manage to, with help from the immortals, kill off the demon prince without iron arm. On the other flank, I demicate the pink horrors in ruins, and reduce them to 4 models. Arcing from the scythes manages to whittle down a few in the other squad.
Assault sees one dead wraith, and one wound on the GUO warlord.
Daemon Turn 4
Spoiler:
My opponent moves his iron arm prince into assault position, attempting to bail out his warlord, and kill my warlord, ignoring my barges and troops. Pink horrors shuffle.
The pink horrors summon a herald of nurgle, with the portalglyph, which he immediately throws down on top of an unclaimed objective. It spawns 2 horrors, which camp the objective. He enfeebles my wraiths and warlords, allowing his iron arm prince to ID my warlord in assault. His prince assaults in, and challenges my warlord, and this round, i decline. I make an ungodly number of invuln saves, and take 1 casualty, and deal no wounds.
Necron Turn 5
Spoiler:
Here is hoping the game ends early!
I move my scythe into position, and pass it over his back objective, dropping my warriors off. My immortals Move onto their objectives. If the game ends at the end of this turn, i will hold 5 objectives, to his 1, and get max points. Barges shuffle to provide extra fire.
Shooting sees his unit of horrors dead, and I deal 1 wound to the herald of nurgle.
Annoyingly on the other flank, a barge, scythe, and 9 immortals can't kill off his two pink horrors, or the portalglyph.
In assault, I accept the prince's challenge, and he fails MSS, dealing a wound to himself, but I do not otherwise push any more wounds through. I deal one wound to the warlord, and lose a wraith.
Daemon Turn 5
Spoiler:
His herald moves to an inch away from my immortals, his horrors move onto objectives to limit LOS.
In an interesting gamble, his last unit of horrors summoned earlier sacrifice themselves, and bring forth a Changer of Ways. (Gulp, more MC's) If this game continues, I will lose that squad of warriors, or my immortals.
His herald of nurgle charges my gauss immortals, hoping to beat them in assault. He gets there after ineffective overwatch fails to get through his 2+ cover, at i1, and the immortals once again show off their bayonnet work this game, and kill him in assault, the consolidate onto the objective to prevent contesting. In assault, his prince passes MSS, and kills my enfeebled warlord. I have two wraiths left.
We roll to see if the game continues AND
The game ends as, we roll a "1" and the game ends. Which leaves me with 5 objectives to 1, so I max points on Primary, and I achieved all my secondaries, maxing my points at 15 for the round, to my opponent's 6. Crushing Victory for the Necrons!
As a note to myself, this would have been a very very different game had it gone one more turn, his greater demons would have caused havoc and cost me 2-3 objectives most likely.
Necron Turn 6
Spoiler:
Sike
Daemon Turn 6
Spoiler:

Well done Ian. Glad to see you are beating Daemons these days.
Interestingly enough, Necrons are a tough matchup for FMC and MC daemons, as the MCs don't really have a way of dealing with wraiths, barges, or night scythes effectively.
As well, playing Nurgle MCs, there is little to no shooting, which allows for necrons to maximize their opposing shooting. Barges are 90 points are require a turn of assaulting to kill, which seems like petty points compared to the ~350 points of a kitted out DP. On the other hand, if you don't assault and kill them, they can use their firepower to the full effect. It's tougher for the Daemons I would say
Good batrep though. Looking forward to the other ones

Pre-Game Analysis
Ooof, this should get really interesting. I had a feeling that maybe i'd reached too far up and touched the sun, and I might be ready to get burnt, as I squared off against one of the Invitational's Players, Kurt Clauss's double beast star.
He has a pretty large experience edge, and a devestating ground assault presence, with speed to make my day very rough here. I want to keep him at arm's length as long as possible to hopefully kill a beast pack with shooting, kill the other/tie it up in assault with my wraiths, and then use my many guns to deal with that wraithknight. If I can do that, i think I will be in decent shape....but i've never played against beast-star in 40k....I have a feeling there may be some tricks I am not yet aware of. Granted, he won't be getting fortune on them at least... Obviously, he wants to hide his venoms, and his bikes as long as possible and let these hard parts of his army do the heavy lifting in assault, where he can grind me down with the sheer number of wounds he is coming in with.
Deployment
Spoiler:
Dark Eldar Deployment He Deploys with his wraithknight on the left flank, and his beasts pile behind LOS blocking cover in the middle of every map at NOVA. His wyches hide in their venoms out of sight at the back of his deployment zone. Karandras takes one unit near the wraithknight, Baron and Vect go into the other.
Necron Deployment I put my wraiths in front of my barges to grant them cover against suncannon shots, and keep my barges in the open to lay down fire, i keep most of my immortals out as well to tr and weed out a few extra beasts. I keep the warriors in their flyer
Dark Eldar Turn 1
Spoiler:
The beasts all move and run into LOS blocking cover, ready to plough through it next turn, and I wont be able to do much about it, as the wraithknight fans out left for shots on a barge, trying for first blood. His shooting sees no barges damaged, and he kills a wraith with splinter cannons.
Necrons Turn 1
Spoiler:
I keep my wraiths where they are, moving them back slightly, trying to bait him into a long charge. My barges fan out, and infantry move up slightly for a shot. My shooting kills a couple of beasts from each unit, but does no significant damage. I get no arcing damage at all, despite how tightly packed the units are.
Turn 1 I think favored him, despite no real damage from his shooting, his positioning is better than mine, and I know it.
Dark Eldar Turn 2
Spoiler:
His bikes stay off the board. His beasts move into the open, crossing the terrain to get to me. They close the distance on the right flank to about 8-9 inches. His shooting again is largely desultory, and results in another wound on my wraiths. His beasts on the right flank roll poorly on their run, despite fleet. He shuffles some bodies around instead. On the other flank, his beasts continue to cover ground, but are a very very long charge away, he does not attempt a charge.
It seems like he will rely on the wyches and bikes to score, the rest of his army is ignoring the objectives. Good to know.
Necrons Turn 2
Spoiler:
Two of my empty fliers come in. I send both on my right flank trying to lessen the hammer blow that will be their charge. My wraiths spread out to screen my barges and infantry. My warlord and his wraiths, with barge and infantry backup, move into a short assault range, as I feel there is no way I will get another round of shooting, and better to assault than be assaulted. My infantry move up, and barges shuffle.
My shooting this turn is good, but not great, I kill 3 beastmasters, and probably 7-8 Kymerae, but again, arcing fails me.
On the other flank, his saves are red hot, as he loses 4-5 kymerae in total.
In assault, my warlord and wraiths assault in, and since his unit is so big, many do not get to swing. However, they have a lot of attacks. I issue a challenge, a beastmaster accepts, and I punk him. The wraiths kill 2-3 more beasts. I lose a wraith in return and we stick in assault.
I feel like, given the circumstances, I'm doing the best I can. I think if I roll decently on my saves, I can keep him locked up for a bit at least, and let my flyers kill his meagre scoring units.
Dark Eldar Turn 3
Spoiler:
His bikes come in, and hide in the backfield, hopefully out of LOS of my scythes. His wraithknight and beasts move into a very short charge with my wraiths.
His venoms tuck themselves into the corner of the LOS blocker, safe from strafing runs.
His wraithknight kills a wraith with a suncannon shot. His beasts charge into my wraiths, and multi assault the nearby unit of immortals. His wraithknight charges my wraiths, making the charge easily, and begins smashing my helpless troops, the immortals, who are also in the assault with the beasts
I kill a few beasts, he kills a wraith, and 4 immortals. Against all odds, the immortals stay in assault. 1 gets up.
On the other side, the assault grinds on, another challenge, another dead beastmaster, and another dead wraith. I put a few more wounds on the beasts, and we stick again.
I feel like if I can keep those combats up for a while, I'll be in good shape. However, he has largely made my scythes irrelevant, but I think he forgot about the warriors, maybe I can snag his 2 point in his backfield with some luck and good dice later.
Necron Turn 3
Spoiler:
My other two scythes come on, as they have nearly nothing to shoot, I try and line up his bikes with last round's flyers, and I try and fail to line up his venoms. I move my unengaged immortals back onto objectives and into cover. I fly two of my scythes off the table. My shooting sees the bike squad in the back reduced to one member.
Dark Eldar Turn 4
Spoiler:
He moves his one man bike squad onto his 1 point objective, and tries to hide him there. The rest move onto his 3 point behind the LOS blocker, with the wyches. The worst comes to pass, as my warlord and wraiths are overwhelmed by failing 12/15 saves that round, and the warlord being rended to death. In steriotypical fashion, he doesn't get up, and never would for the entirety of the tournament.
On the other flank, his wraithknight punks more immortals, and Karandras with his fist causes 3 str8 wounds, and I fail all 3 saves, and my wraiths are wiped, immortals run down.
Well.....!#* That cost me the game for sure, but I think there are a few things I can still do to get a few points, or prevent him from getting max.
Necron Turn 4
Spoiler:
I move my immortals back, and move my tesla immortals over, trying to wipe out his very weak beast pack with karandras. My two scythes move onto the board and line up the beast pack as well. My barges move to engage vect and his beast pack. I line up my warrior night scythe to drop off my immortals, and fly my other scythe off the board.
My shooting is......impressive...ly bad. 20 immortals and 2 scythes put a wound on karandras, and kill most of the rest of the beasts he is with. On the other side, I whittle a few more beasts away
If my immortals don't die, i will have my 3 point objective, and my 1 point objective, and possibly his two pointer.....lets see if I can steal one.
Dark Eldar Turn 5
Spoiler:
His wyches tuck themselves in, and his bikes move over to my 3 pointer to contest. His wraithknight moves to assault a barge Karandras and CO. move to attack my gauss immortals. Vect and Co. move to attack my tesla immortals
His wraithknight in shooting blows a barge away.
In assault, he manages a multi-assault on both units off immortals, and a barge, all are overrun, after causing a few wounds back. He moves to attack my other two remaining barges.
Necron Turn 5
Spoiler:
I move and drop my warriors onto his 2 point objective. I manage to line a scythe up on his venom I've marked for death as well. I move the barges away from the wraithknight, hoping he will chase them rather than objectives.
I shoot Vect's unit, and do a surprising amount of damage, I whittle karandras's down as well, my scythes contibute where they can, and between my warriors and my scythe, put a glance on the marked venom....darn.....that was my shot there.
Well, should the game end, he will win primary 6-2, and secondary 6-2 We roll, and the game, of course, continues!
Dark Eldar Turn 6
Spoiler:
He moves his venoms to shoot at my warriors. He moves vect and karandras to assault a barge each, and wraithknight onto a 3 point objective.
His shooting kills a pair of warriors, they pass morale, but neither gets up. In assault, karandras wrecks his barge, and consolidates back onto an objective. Vect however, fails to kill his barge.
Not gettin' tabled today! No sir!
Necron Turn 6
Spoiler:
My barge hops OVER vect's unit, putting him as the closest model to it. Maybe..... Scythes fly around, as they are apt to do. In shooting, i fail to kill his venom with warrior potshots.
However....in perhaps a bout of over-confidence, Vect takes 7 wounds from my barge he was attacking, and decides to tank them to preserve the squad.... And he fails his Shadowfield! Warlord for me?!
We roll to see if the game ends, and it does
Victory Dark Eldar! Primary 9-2 Secondary 6-4 Total, 15-6
Well, I wanted a challenge, and I got one! Its been a very long time since I was nearly tabled. But man, that one was rough. He did a great job keeping his beasts outta the line of fire of my scythes, and I could never line up his troops since all maps feature LOS blocking terrain. Oh well, onto bigger and better things. I had no illusions I was going to go all the way my first time at one of these things. I have done a bit of digging, and learned Kurt Finished 23rd overall in the GT, and I can say he was a lot of fun to play against, I would certainly do so again, so thanks again!

As clarification the Karandras pack in the multiassault assaulted immortals and wraiths while the WK assaulted wraiths. After the wraith he assaulted died, the pile in moves from immortals and the WK put them in base. The Wk did not multicharge, he was part of a multiassault. Also I had bottom, not top Thanks for the game Ian, pleasure to play with you.

Guys, my current schedule is leaving almost no time to write full reports, thus the long wait times. I will likely do a picture dump with an annotated synopsis of the game, so I can get the rest of them out.
Apologies
