It's that time of year.
I have to chose my Pumpkin Ale of Fall 2014.
The locally available choices are:
Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale
Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream Pumpkin Ale
Small Patch Pumpkin Harvest Ale - Tommyknocker Brewery
Woodchuck Private Reserve Pumpkin Cider
I really like to taste pumpkin/pumpkin pie in my pumpkin ales. Its a pumpkin ale, so I want PUMPKIN. This is a one-time-a-year purchase, I have to make the right pick. So far, the only one on Beer Advocate that comes close is Magic Hat.
Never had magic hat. Dont know what to expect.
So, any Cerevisaphiles out there that can help me out?

I like pumpkin beer too. Why limit yourself to just one?
If you like the taste of pumpkin pie, try a White Russian made with pumpkin flavored vodka. It's crazy good.

Pumpkinhead is a classic and it's sales have caused it to be produced in cans and released even earlier than normal every year. Take from that what you will.
Can't say I remember the others on the list (though a cursory glance at my Untappd app says I've had a few of them and found them middling).
If you really like Pumpkin taste, see if you can get your hands on PumKing (22 oz.) from Southern Tier. Stuff is unreal, I would highly recommend.
My personal favorite (though I'm known to have a weakness for shandys) is Jack O'Traveler, from the Traveler Brewing Company. I buy it any time I find it. Though it helps to enjoy shandys as well.
I hear the Sam Adam's Harvest Pumkin is good this year, been meaning to try it myself. Their Smashed Pumpkin (22 oz) is usually decent. I have some Shock Top pumpkin concoction sitting in the fridge as well.

I can only recommend not getting pumpkinhead from shipyard. While I think they have the absolute best packaging of a beer ever, eating cinnamon candies is gross therefore pumpkinhead is gross.

Shock Tops pumpkin ale is terrible.
If you can find them:
Schafley's Pumpkin Ale
Pumpking - Southern Tier Brewing
Punkin Ale - Dogfish Head
Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin - Cigar City
The two middle ones should be relatively easy to find. Schafley's and Good Gourd are a bit more regional.
Sam Adams' Harvest Pumpkin is also good, and should be easy to find.

Also, after finally trying Shock Top's Pumpkin offering, I can only agree with Cincy. It is decidedly 'meh' at best.
