Probably an Overlord.

After all you need someone to lead your mindless metal zombies into battle.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Annihilation Barges. They're so cheap that you can easily fit multiple into low-point games.

Low point games?

Warriors or Immortals and an HQ.

Seriously, the Necron codex? No mandatory units. You can take whatever army you like and have a good chance of winning.

The necron 'dex has some pretty poor internal balancing. You definitely can not take an army with say... lychgarde or praetorians and have a good chance at winning. Hideously overcosted for what they do.

Generally there are two ways to run low point Necron lists:

Either an Overlord with Warscythe on CCB making for a solid, resilient centrepiece and good anti-tank and 2 troops of warriors, one of which is in a ghost ark, OR a maxed out squad of 20 warrior with overlord and res orb soaking ungodly amounts of fire and then some other things you can take like annie barges.

Well, in small pt games you need numbers.

can be said for every army. But if the points limit is 500, I prefer to have some big, scary, unexpected stuff the opponent might not have the right weapon to deal with, rather than predictable numbers.

Immortals are better than Warriors at 500 points because there's a lot less AP3 around at that points level, and a lot more AP4.
