Just got back from a three/four year holiday(?) from 40k, last time I threw dice across the table was in 4th ed. so I have LOADS of catching up to do. I've picked myself up a 7th ed rulebook, 500pts Orks and played a few skirmishes with some mates. So my question is, can I freely shoot/be shot at, through friendly and/or enemy units? Not vehicles I know but I'm just wondering if Gretchin are still of any real value?

I have only recently started playing again too; though I think I did sneak in a bit of 5th edition. And if they have line of sight then yes - so if they can see the unit! Though they'd get a cover save - 4+ I think?
