Ok some help needed dakka.

I am looking to start a new army but I am rubbish at painting so I only want a few models, absolutely no hordes or large squads.

I have marines and will consider any other races.

I want to have a solid 1500 points that can take on all comers. Cost not too much of an issue. Not overlee keen on an all tank list either.

Any suggestions welcome.

Grey Knights. taking on all comers with them will be DIFFICULT but doable.

and you're apt to have less then 30 models on the board

A Tau suit army might work as well, a high amount of flexibility with weapon loadouts on crisis suits, broadsides, and riptides. A low model count, but a good chance to take out anything you might run up against from heavy armor to hordes, dependent on your choice of weapons. Of course, if you prefer melee then it wouldn't work.

Ideally I would lik a bit of both cc and shooty. Do tau have no cc?

Maybe grey knights? They're marines, they're durable, shooty, choppy and have a good psychic phase.

Imperial knights. I'm not sure on the points per model, as I don't own any or their codex, but you'll only be fielding a handful of models and they can be played a couple of ways.

White Scars marines.

Or other bike based army.

Another vote for Grey Knights. They're low model count and with SM allies you can take all comers.

And we have a winner. 1500 points of Imperial knights will net you 4 models to paint. That's it.

All 4 have heavy anti armour blast template weapons as well as a giant chainsaw sword that can instantly kill anything it hits.

And they're a rather cool model which is fun to build.

And the warlord traits are all pretty good.

And if you take Knights as your primary formation, your warlord gets +1BS, +1 WS and +1 to his invulnerable save. Can even declare it the Adamantine lace to re-roll your invulnerables when you're less than 3" from another Knight for virtual invincibility.

Not much chop against flyers, but will give everyone else a solid run for their money, and you can almost afford to ignore flyers to a certain degree, and in some cases, even outmaneuver them.

If you want to shore up your weakness and utilise your marines in larger games, the Stormwing formation (1x stormraven and 2x storm talons) rocks in at close as makes no difference 500 points when fully kitted, taking you to 2000 points with 8 models and not too many weaknesses.

Grey knight, is the poster child for almost no figures, I guess Imperial Knights as well (or as allies)

I would prefer to have man sized models. Any suggestions along this line.

Farsight Enclaves.

2x Commander w/ 2 missile pods and target locks. One has velocity tracker (skyfire) and the other has drone controller.

2 Crisis Bodyguards w/ 4 marker drones. One battlesuit has two missile pods and target locks, the other gets all the fun stuff (as a non-character, he's the only guy who can take the regular Empire signature systems; ignores cover and re-roll to hit for his unit, as well as either tank hunters, monster hunter, or stubborn).

3 Crisis suits with two missile pods each

2x 2 Crisis Suits w/ 2 fusion blasters each

Riptide w/ heavy burst cannon, sms, earth caste pilot array

At this point you're at roughly 1050 points with 16 models (including 4 drones). Depending on how competitive you want to get, you can add two more Riptides and some unit upgrades, or another Riptide plus a three-man Crisis units, all with dual burst cannons and a bunch of gun drones, or a couple of Crisis squads and some unit upgrades.

You'll be looking at an army of about 20-25 models that's fairly mobile, flexible, fun to play, themed, and either fairly competitive or just fairly good on a casual level, depending on how you go for the last third of your points.

If you want a bit of CC, you can drop the commander with skyfire in favour of Farsight and drop him in with a burst cannon Crisis team, or one of the fusion blaster units, depending on circumstances.
