It just occurred to me that in the numerous (and useful) Grey Knight codex discussions and first test games, I haven't see anyone speak to the Vortex spell, which a player is likely to have, assuming they run two ML3 Librarians (and roll Sanctic).

I personally have not, but in considering the lack of AP2 for a pure GK list, on paper, this looks like it could do some work. It might also be the cheapest, most readily available "D" Strength attack in the game.

Anyone have actual experience using it? Thoughts?

Its a novelty, risky to use being 3 charges and auto-peril if you fail to cast it

Short range and subject to the same blast scattering rules.

It can be useful, usually not worth the dice to cast it though

I've used it...hyper dangerous with such short range and expensive infantry.

It's likely to be the most unused power on you unless there's a tougher nut like a land raider or imperial knight.

It left my Termies standing in the wind when they would have had an equally easy time winning combat and getting movement and safety from shooting.

Yea, I'd only toss it at high priority targets with large profiles like Knights, or Landraiders, or Wraithknights, or even Riptides.

Its funny, because my meta happens to have a couple folks in love with Knights, which is precisely what I had in mind.

Would the "safer" way for GK to down a Knight to be throwing a couple Dreadknights at it with Nemesis Greatswords?

The skaven player in me wants to say go for it.
However, the more sensible answer would be dreadknights.

They are far less situational and will always have a use.
They also wont backfire as often either.

I've used it in a few games, and as long as you threw enough dice at it to make sure it went off, you're good to go, and it is devastating. One game I had three vortices swirling around the board, they just wouldn't go out. Vortex was dangerous before, but it just got mitigated, and here are two good reasons:

1. Liber Daemonica- nothing like a little help to ensure that power that HAS to go off does so, and without using up ALL your warp charges "just to be safe"
2. Cuirass of Sacrifice- FNP for those perils wounds, if you're not in a Pallie squad
3. Perils of the Warp really isn't that scary anymore. Many of the results have you take a LD test; big deal. One turns you into a raging Hulk; bonus.

With all that being said, I did have it scatter right back onto my Libby ONCE, which was both sad and hilarious at the same time.
