Hi all,

after a long long time playing in friendly and semi-competitive environments I am thinking about trying myself in a tournament. Now what I have no idea of is how strict is it usually handled with WYSIWYG in tournaments? I've heard horror stories and also usually magnetise a lot of stuff, but currently I am looking at 25 unassambled Wraithguards and do not feel like magnetising them all. Also a Grey Knight army is on its way to me and I somehow don't feel like magnetising all those weapon options...

Can you guys give me an impression from your environments? Is this a topic at all?

Thanks and best,
Murenius

If it's a major tournament, wysiwyg is usually applied thoroughly. But it always comes down to communicating with the TO:s in advance - their ruling is what matters.

In the end, magnetising is a hassle, but I would do it despite that. Once it's done, it's so worth it.

Something I do when Im feeling lazy and want to assemble for a tournament or game but don't want t magnetize an entire kit is just magnetize the options I want at that moment and then bag the rest. If I need the other option at a later date I can still do them or just get to it when Im feeling more in the mood but at least then you still have a magnetized main figure with the options you want for that particular tourney and can just finish the rest later.

also depends on your opponents.. i played a guy with 20 flesh hounds on square bases.. for me i didnt care but im not sure the reaction of his other four opponents that weekend.. if you don't come off as waac you should be ok.. smaller tournaments tend to just be happy that they fill up.. and msging your T.O. is a great idea as well.

Basing is a completely different issue than WYSIWYG, though.

I've only gone to RTTs where it isn't a problem, but at a proper GT's how concerned are they with secondary/minor WYSIWYG. For instance, Melta Bombs or Tyranid Bio-morphs? I sometimes add Adrenal glands or Toxin Sac for aesthetic reasons without planning to pay the points for them.

Or another case, I've got a handful of slugga/choppa ork Boyz that are modeled with 2 sluggas. It wouldn't really change the effectiveness of the model, but it is technically not modeled correctly.

The most important thing is to be really clear with your opponent about anything that is not strictly correct, any models that you are using as "counts as", and DEFINITELY any non wysiwyg.

100% WYSIWYG is pretty much unachievable, it's not supported by GW. Many options don't have a model counterpart, you can modify one yourself, but that is not canon and no TO will ever require it's players to modify models to partecipate.

Get right the weapons and major stuff, the minor things like glands, grenades and similar usually are not a problem (and glands are horrid on gants, they totally ruin the model).

:WYSIWYG- is really this...

1.Come to a tournament with relatively the correctly displayed wargear for your models.
Exception: You have say 1 model that you have a reason for not having modeled in such a manner
Ex: I had a space wolf model displayed with lightning claws however he didn't have any.
However (And this is the big part, I made sure that my opponent knew that before the game that he was supposed to resemble the Mark of the Wolfen model
"the fluff, states that a Mark of the Wolfen uses his hands to claw through his opponent" So my opponent was totally fine with it, and actually liked that I did this

When its not ok: You have an entire unit with an array of weapon but none of them are actually displayed, with totally different weapons than of what you see to the point its confusing

Another example of what is not OK:
Show up to a tournament with an Ork army. Proceed to pull out a Blood Angels codex and say "these orks count as...."

Yes. This happened.

I have a 100% completely custom build Salamanders army. It's mostly lizardmen bits. If I had to give you a rough estimate, I'd say close to 70% is lizardman fantasy bits and I took it to NovaOPEN last week. People loved it. All the weapons were WYSIWYG and that's what really matters.

I have 2 Stormravens that were Carnosaurs with wings with MM straped to its chest, and a Assault Cannon on a howdah on the top.

I have 10 skinks with boltguns for scouts.

I have 20 Sternguard with space marine bodies, Temple Guard heads and lizard cloaks from a 3rd party company.

Similarly, I had 10 Tacticals with space marine bodies, normal Warrior lizardman heads, and lizard cloaks from a same 3rd party.

Also for my 5 drop pods, I had Styrofoam eggs I bought from Japan on ebay for 8$ and bought vehicle destroyed templates (in the shape of drop pods) that I glued to the bottoms for exact dimensions.

I got no complaints, only compliments. Most of the time I got "You know this is a 40k tournament, right?" and we both got a good laugh.

IMO, I'd just worry about the weapons on your models and keep the theme consistent.
