The title says it all, so can my Tau ally with them or does it say only Imperials can take them?

It's no different than any other unit in the game and falls under the 'Forces of the Imperium' faction in the Allies Matrix. Short answer is that anything can ally with anything but with penalties during gameplay.

Using normal allies rules for "Forces of the Imperium", yep, they sure can.

on a related note: What type of ally are assassins now?
(IE: What other allies won't I be able to take if I take assassins? Can I do 1 assassin and one allied detachment from a secondary army?)

Not what I meant. I meant do they take up the secondary detachment slot, or are they separate... like Codex Inquisition.

They have their own detachment. You'd 'spend' an 'allied' detachment, but using its own rules.

Aren't you allowed to take as many detachments as you want, so long as you meet their minimum requirements and have the points for them?

seeing as that is not an official rule or anything I would ask your TO.
In the BRB they are just a detachment, of which you can take as many as you'd like.

Wow, ok. For some reason I was certain you could only have one Allied Detachment. Is this something I brought with me from 6th, or did I just assume a restriction where there was none?

It was something from 6th. Now you can have any number of Detachments. You can take: 1 CAD - Primary 2 Inquisitor Detachments 3 Assassin Detachments 1 CAD 2 Great Waagh Detachments 4 Allied Detachments etc, etc, You should only worry about the restrictions from each individual Detachment.
