Hi everyone, I would like to paint an army to play at my local GW outlet, but not go broke in the process. I did some looking around for alternative black primers and found "The Armory" black primer. It costs less than half as much per can and has more primer. Has anyone had a positive experience with this primer? I don't want't to sell an arm and a leg to paint an army, but I also don't want to ruin good models by clogging fine details up with primer.

Any thoughts on the armory primer would be great.

I've used armory primer on and off for years. No particular reason I stopped using it. It worked just as well as all the others I've tried - GW, Army Painter.

The only thing I noticed was that the armory black that I used was often more a black/grey rather than a dark black.

I'll give you a magic trick that most people are unwilling to tell you....

Ok, that's a lie:

KRYLON.
Spoiler:

Krylon indoor/outdoor primer is just fine, and clogs NO detail (per proper usage, of course. Read the can). Plain jane, normal, just primer in a can, primer. In your preferred color...

BWAHAHA! Bask in the awesome that is savings. Grab a can of black and go to town.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

So even better than plain primer, Krylon's paint plus primer series comes in white and black and has never failed me.

I'll bump krylon. I think they have been making spray paint for 60 years? They must be doing something right to be in business for Tha long.

Hey,

For those in Australia, I use the Australian Export Aerosol Paint - Matt Black from Super Cheap Auto, they are currently selling for 4 for $10 (AU) or $3.89 AU each and i have yet to have any issues with them. One can clogged up on me but only because i didnt clear the nozzle after using it but for a couple of dollars wasnt upset about that. Have not had any issue with loss of detail (except when i first started because i was still working out how not to spray miniatures and was putting to much on).

I did not care for it at all in comparison to GW black primer. I felt that Armory gave an uneven/grainy coverage. GW has given me a much smoother and more uniform prime.
