So far, I think this is my favorite of the knights. Great Ranged weapon, and a nice unique melee weapon that is good against everything except Strength D melee Opponents.

I could certainly see this on the table top as a compliment to just about any army.

That is crazy! It would be Orks and Nids nightmare. And it can be used as Anti-air pretty well too.

It's good! How good, though, depends on how you interpret the interaction between Tempest Attack (one hit on everything in b2b at I2) and Deflagrate (wounds cause extra hits). If they combine, and I think they should*then it's a true hard counter to hordes, if not then it's still good, but not great. There's a little back-and-forth over the wording in the N&R thread, but maybe something in YMDC or an email to Forge World is needed, as, fluff aside, both interpretations seem valid.

Pretty Anti everything. St10 ap 2 will burn through almost anything + extra hits on wounds basically puts it at near D weapon rolls of 2-5.

How is this only 5 pts more than a Paladin? Is it because it lacks a heavy stubber?

That's a tough call because Tempest Attack says "Rather than attacking normally..." while Deflagrate says "After normal attacks by this weapon...".

So I'd say no since in order for Deflagrate to work you must be making 'normal attacks' while Tempest Attack specifically says it is not attacking normally.

I think Zimko is correct using RAW. You either get the 4(5) nasty deflagrate melee attacks and roll to hit or you get an autoattack against all. Still very destructive either way.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

I take the 'normal' in the TA wording to mean 'not a Stomp/HoW attack'. I'm pretty sure RAI is that Deflagrate is always active, as TA states attacks are made 'with the weapon's profile'. This profile includes Deflagrate , hence it's in effect.

The melee special rules it has are awkward, yet can be very OP versus blobs. It appears deal double wounds to small units, or wounds every model in very large units. The range weapon is pretty good versus Flyers, for a non-Skyfire weapon, yet it seems be a dedicated anti-MEQ weapon. This guy is basically the Anti-Infantry version of the Lancer, yet priced like the Lancer should have been.

I'm looking forward to converting one from the plastic Knight kit.

I really like it. The abilities of this thing for it's points is really good (perhaps a bit too good) but the requirements for fielding it make up for this as you either have to take it as a LoW or take another knight. If you take this + another knight you might have been better off with an Addy Lance.

The dropping down from Str D to Str 10 is the reason this thing is approximately the same pts as a paladin. Str D is a big deal when you get into a fight with another super heavy or MC (wraithkights!).

So, could you take one castigator and one of the other FW knights? Since the rule just says you can't have more than you have other knights?

you could yes.

so a list of a "Castigator + Lancer" is a legit list. but 2 castigators and a lancer is a nope.

Yet a pair of each is alright again.
Funny way it works there XD I think the desigen purpose is to avoid overspamming of any single one of them.

Anyway, I don't see it as superior to the paladin. 8 TL S7AP3 shots are not really superior to 2 S8AP3 pie plates. its a situational call when sometimes one is better, sometimes the other. and his melee skills are much stronger against hordes and such, but actually quite weaker against MCs of T6 or above, or walkers (and superheaviers ofc), especially if they pack decent invul saves.

That would be a problem, he is FAR bigger.
It makes the knight rooster more flexible, but not any more powerful. I say FW actually hit the mark there and did a great job.

Its also the only Knight who can attack Flyers with any hope of success.

That alone makes taking one at the very least a good idea. You will get on average at least 1 hit on a flyer each turn. And Str7 can hurt any of the flyers out there.

Plus it can actually fight its way out of tarpits without Stomps.

I count the inability to be tarpitted for multiple rounds by something like a marine Tactical squad as a plus..

I think he'd be a good choice for a knight warlord, the BS boost helps him more and a bump to WS5 makes his attacks more likely to hit in the first place.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

If I had to choose I think I'd stick with the lancer. The ability to take down other knights without being attacked back is big, and stomp already clears hordes pretty well.

Depends what your army needs, of course.

Stomp is not terribly effective vs. MEQ and neither are only 3 swings of a massive chainsword. A plain, in upgraded 10 man tactical squad could keep a knight busy for several turns. It's not as bad as what I did to a poor Riptide with a Battle Sister squad, but a knight also costs more.

Yup, if a knight is in melee with a large squad of MEQs he basically has to hope he rolls a 6 for one of his stomps.

When are you ever facing a full 10 man squad of meq? If your knight charged them, they probably got shot first. And how does a knight get charged if you don't want it to be charged?

Personally, I only ever see 5man meq combat squads, something a knight would handle fairly quickly. I suppose maybe there's A csm player who brings csms... But of course, my army has grav cents in it, so I have no issues deleting a squad and a half of meq if I so choose to do so from that unit.

Even 6-7 guys will tie a Knight up.

And terminators are just bad news all around.

Why is your knight charging a tarpit? Or why are those tarp it's not being removed while the knight was working over something else?

And hey, evEn if you kill two tactical marines, they are testing at ld6. Good chances of running, and 50/50 of letting them get away (or can you choose not to sweep now?).

Unless the goal post moves to them being fearless now, too.
