Subject: Mojang bought by Microsoft at 2.5 Billion
Mojang was bought yesterday by Microsoft. Microsoft specifically stated it was buying Mojang for Minecraft. I hope they don't load it with ads and weird stuff.

We've seen the rumors, but for now, they're just rumors.

And of course according to the first article, some of the devs are leaving now that it's becoming an M$ thing. Probably not a good sign.

Primary source provided, I win the internetz. BOW DOWN, RAPTORLORD.
Of course I find it to be a match made in heaven. Microsoft is a company run by self important d-bags. Notch is a self important d-bag. They were made for each other (Helps that I don't care about what happens to Minecraft. Long live Terraria!")

Expect the extreme monetization of Minecraft to begin. No more free big updates for the PC. The game will probably now require an internet connection to play, so Microsoft can make sure you're only using skins, texture packs, and mods that you paid for.
There is no other reason for MS to have paid that much if they do not plan to monetize the hell out of it.

While I expect monetization, because thats how this stuff rolls, I think the real goal here is to use Minecraft as a marketing platform to undermine rivals. Release updates and DLC earlier for the game on Microsoft platforms, advertise phones and tablets as "Minecraft approved" and get paid by their competitors for those updates and DLC.

2 Billion for such a small developer is a lot of money (a testament to the success of Minecraft, and just how much Microsoft needs a boost to it's games division).

Microsoft Studios is a software developer/Publisher and has been (obviously) suffering over the years. They kind of swung back and forth precariously and right now, well the XBone ain't selling all that hotly (at least not as hotly as it needs to be). Plus their mobile division is also trying to break out of their slump cause they've always lagged behind in that market and this could certainly help.

That's what I thought. So they're going to be expecting to make that back, and then some.

I know they exist, I was more mocking their inadequacy.

What big free updates, they haven't really done any decent patches in a long while.
Also funny after Notch railed against selling out and made many statements to the fact...
Then he sells out, bit of a hypocrite.

Why would he care? It's not like he made the game. Maybe Minecraft will be lucky, and just like the last time Notch left, Minecraft will get a whole bunch of awesome modders to come in and make a super buggy piece of gak super duper awesom- No wait Microsoft that's right.

I believe 1.8 just rolled out.

The list of what I'd do for two billion dollars is extraordinarily long.

2 billion dollars. I assume that most Dakka users will never even be CLOSE to that amount of money I can fully understand him. Everyone would do the same, it's the smartest thing you can do.
