Iv had a dabble at gaming years ago when my son was into it but never took it further even when helping my son at home being the other army for him to practice on. I'm not against having a go at gaming but prefer not to go to my local Gamesworkshop like I used to take my son to, but would prefer the friends taking it in turns to go to each other's scenario. Unfortunately none of my friends are into gaming so I'm happy to enjoy what I do at home.
But I just wondered how many of us who enjoy the hobby of painting modelling and reading about the fluff on our own at home there are?

I know virtually nobody that plays any games I do. So yeah, that'd be me

That is similar to me.
I've played 40K once, but I have a large collection of GW models and I generally buy the books of the armies I'm interested in. I also have a bunch of Privateer Press models and I've never played any other their games. The only game I can say I really play is FFG's X-Wing, and I'll probably play the next two Star Wars games they are putting out as well.

I too am one of "those people".
I've been collecting for 10+ years now and in that time i've probably had 5 games. All pre-6th edition. I've always wanted to play on a regular basis, but I've just never found anyone to play with.
So i've turned more towards the collecting side of things.

It's looking like there are similarities for reasons why we enjoy the hobby our own way? I would have probably played if there were more opportunities , that is local friends with our own gaming boards to swap between? As it stands I'm thinking about making a gaming board of some sort , but as a larger diorama. I'll have to have a go at learning how to play and maybe get something like a solitaire type game worked out maybe? Just as something to make a change or extra part of my solitary hobby :-)

More by circumstance than choice, I hardly get to play these days, as my gaming group had all but disintegrated, but I still plug away at completing units and armies and even whole new games that have yet to see play. I'd leap at the chance to get a game in, but aside from roping in family to play that's not come up in months.

I played a lot of games at my local GW store when the 40K Apocalypse rules first came out.
The type of people that used to arrive and nag and bitch and ruin the spirit of the game really turned me off social gaming for a while.
Also a new job and lots of moving meant that I never really got to get together and game with people much although I kept collecting, modelling and painting the whole time.
Now that I'm pretty sure I'll be living in the one place for the next few years and a GW store has opened close by recently (also some guys I work with meet to play) I might make more of an effort to game on weekends

I've always been more of a modeler than a gamer. Started with trains and tanks and stuff as a kid. was introduced to a novel concept of using models for gaming later in life and now I have a billion models for various armies in various games.
Unfortunately I don't get a lot of time that I could spend on playing games and don't have many friends into gaming or models at all. I might as well be a non-gamer.

i'm a painter, not a gamer...
i've been collecting minis and books for 30 years, but never really felt the need to play the games...
i like painting at game stores, and hanging out with friends, but when it comes down to getting a game in, it just feels like that is time that would be better spent painting...
that said, i am a hopeless addict for minis, art and fluff...
i also enjoy dreaming of the armies i could build, until i think of how many years it would take me to paint one to my standard, and then go back to painting single minis ...
cheers

I've only played a handful of games since I started (shortly after the advent of 5th ed. 40k). At first, it was due to lack of opponents - I simply didn't know anyone who played in college and lacked a means of getting to a store. Found a few players through the boardgaming club, but with everyone's crazy schedules, we only ever managed to arrange one game.
This is the first time I've had convenient access to a FLGS (lived here for about 3 years, have another 2-3 before we move again), but I still haven't started playing. My collecting/painting interests have shifted away from 40k, mostly (entirely away from P&M, at the moment, but I'll be back soon enough - my hobbies/projects frequently rotate), and there doesn't appear to be much interest to match - asked an employee at the store and was told it's mostly 40k, with a sprinkling of WMH and Malifaux (neither of which I have any interest in).
Introducing myself (on numerous, separate occasions, if I want to meet more than a few players), "selling" a new game, waiting for playable armies to be built up (or getting a pair up to speed, myself, for loaning), prepping appropriate terrain (in the case of Infinity and FoW, which the store has no reason to cater to, currently), AND finding a time where we could actually meet up to play (I work some days, some nights, and share a car with a grad student who sometimes has to pull 18-hour shifts at the lab - not the most flexible arrangement) just sounds like too tall an order, to me.
If someone I already know started to play or I just happened to meet an existing player, elsewhere, I'd probably jump at the chance to join in, even if that meant getting up to speed on 7ed/new codices for 40k and scrambling to update my armies.
As it stands, I feel my limited energies are more satisfyingly directed towards the occasional painting/modelling project at home, on my own time, with no game-related constraints of "necessity" dictating my workflow. Perhaps my view is skewed by lack of exposure to the other side of the hobby, but I think that filling my display cabinet will be more satisfying than winning my first game. I still hold out hope that I'll someday find a good group and start playing something, but I'm reasonably content with just the one side of the hobby.

When I first started out I was a gamer, over the years I have drifted more towards the painting side. Now with a wife, 4 kids and working 100+ hours a week. I just don't have the time or energy to spend playing a 2+ hour game. But I can always go downstairs to the basement into my little corner of sanity and slap some paint on some plastic/white metal, and feel like my hobby is still alive and well.
Some day though...... some day... I'll be a gamer again (and heck I might have a few fully painted armies!)

Been into painting and modeling for about 15 years...never played a single match of any tabletop wargame. I enjoy some of the novels (Esp Ciaphas Caine & the Inquisitor series) and like the artwork inspired by the GW universe. The real enjoyment comes from the process of creation though.
I can't play the piano or paint on a canvas, but I can build monsters all day long. I used to be an avid gamer (2-4 sessions of 4-8 hours a week), but now I'm in it just for the modeling. I will paint anything that looks cool in the scifi and fantasy genres -- GW, PP, Reaper, whatever. I also highly enjoy 40k fluff
Mostly, this is because I now have enough spare time to paint or play, but not both, and modeling is easier to break into little pieces. Plus all the rulebooks are so stupidly expensive now!

I'm in the same boat as many of these folks, I'm a painter and a modeler, all my friends are COD/Destiny Bros, so I never get to play with anyone I know. Add to that that it's an hour drive to the nearest GW or FLGS and I'm up here in my own little world north of Milwaukee.
Still a great solo hobby, even if the Forgemissus thinks I'm nuts.

+1 for the hobbyists here. I've got no interest in the gaming side of things, but I love the fluff and models. I'm more than happy just to work slowly through painting my models, lavishing as much detail as I can manage on each, possible create a few short stories or excerpts to make my characters more engaging and just generally enjoying what I do. To spend exorbitant amounts of money on Codexes, data-slates, supplements, gaming paraphernalia, be rushed to get the latest model to keep up with the winning list and then ultimately give said (probably rather expensive) model a poor paint-job to rush it to the table seems like a waste of money to me. Especially if you don't then enjoy the game because you're that focused on winning the thing! Nah, you can keep it.
I appreciate not all people game in that manner, and I imagine a friendly, fluffy game is probably good fun, but I'd rather take the scenic route and just enjoy doing what I'm doing. On a side note, the one game I'd probably get into would be Battlefleet: Gothic, but, alas, that's long OOP!

I played regularly for at least five years when I first got into the hobby but I haven't played a game for about ten. I tinker with models most days, have several hundred BL novels and twenty years worth of Codices, White Dwarf and the like plus back issues as it is the background that draws me to the game most of all. Actually being able to (potentially) use the models I make in a game is a bonus for me really, rather than the main reason for buying them.

Yeah, on top of ever-changing rules and lists, this is a big part of it. Blowing $50-$100+ on one model and giving it a two-evening paint job just so I can play with it leaves me very dissatisfied later on. And, I'm guilty as much as anyone else for wanting to get a winning unit/combo out there faster than my brush will allow

I've been part of the hobby for about 10 years, and played maybe... 3 games that I can think of off the top of my head. I choose not to play unless I have a fully painted force, and being the perfectionist that I am, I have still not completed anything above 700 pts. Furthermore, if I ever do have time, I prefer to spend time to myself since I'm quite introverted.

This... There's a gaming club or two in my hometown of Leuven, but around 10 years ago, these consisted of only member of the shower-phobic, foaming-at-the-mouth fanboy category and I find this extremely off-putting to the point that I'm not eager to see if there was a positive evolution over the past ten years.
And of all the close friends who were avid 40'kers only three remain, and lives with wives result in still one fixed night per month with 'the crew' (6 of us) for board or roleplaying game but the last 40K game was a year and a half ago...
