I'm thinking of an marine army that is ripe with long range mid strength shooting.

Something like this:

3x Stalkers
3x Rifleman Dreadnought
6x Typhoon Speeders

Total price is right around 800 points which leaves you plenty of room for troops and HQ.
The big advantage I see is you aren't static.

I run 12 Typhoon Speeders with 5 drop pods at 2000 pts...

24 Missiles and 36 HB shots per round. I run them in squads of 2, so if I do jink then I still have a few other squadrons who can fire at normal BS...

It's pretty devastating....

take a master of the forge on bike with conversion beamer. If you cannot find the model, it is easy enough to use a plasma cannon to proxy the beamer. It is one of the best ranged items available in HQ, but it also opens up more slots for dreads if you are interested in going that way - and opens up the IH chapter traits for your vehicles too.
for troops, I'd highly recommend tacticals in drop pods if you want to keep dakka as a prime focus - as there is no way that your opponent can really avoid them.

Well triple melta Tacticals in drop pods seems to be a reasonable troop choice to me.

if you end up trying this out, I'd love to hear how it fairs on the battlefield.
