Sorry if the title is confusing, but my question is could I use a 3rd edition Broadside model and convert it to be equipped with HYMP? I'm asking as when the old model was official, this wasn't an option, so in order to use this new option am I required to buy the new models?

I can't see any issue with that, as long as you are playing the model in line with the current rules.

The only place I can see this being an issue is in Tournaments.

Its WYSWIG so there's no issue.

The most important part is the base (since that has a significant effect on game play) but as long as its clear what it is its completely fine to convert an old broadside

Depends entirely on where you want to play it. Even if we knew the rules of whatever store or game you were playing in, we still wouldn't be able to guess how whoever was enforcing those rules would choose to interpret them for your individual conversion.

In general, everyone except GW will be OK with a conversion which makes it totally clear what it is, keeps the same dimensions and looks fairly good. GW stores may also insist that it uses no parts from non-GW kits.
