You should get what you like the look of the most. Therefore I'd suggest Wood Elves, and maybe some Eternal Guard.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

Ive always found that i will only ever play an army i like the look of, so my armies are all picked based on the ones i like.

It all depends on if you want to play competitive or not though, as a lot of great looking units are not that great on the table.

Just make sure you are happy with the army though as not only is the cost high, but the painting time is harder to deal with.
So you really do have to commit with it.

What's with all the guys that want to start WE with EG? You're like, the third this month.

Eternal Guard is decent for core troops, but will go down easily to anything. If you want to start the army, first pick up a box or two of glade guard. I guarantee you will use the models.
With a few games under your belt, you'll have an idea of the army playstyle and so you'll know what to buy next.

I'm looking at the Wood elves to start as well, i like nature element to it and the tree ents, plus elf races are best (even in 40k )
