After walking home from college today, I pondered this: If an Imperium-allied soldier (IG or SM) claimed to hear the voice of the Emperor, whether through actual Emperor-powers, temporal lobe epilepsy (is real, check it out) , or whether he/she thought it a good idea at the time, what would happen to them?

Would they be executed on the spot, or seized by the Inquisition immediately? Or, something else?

Also, would a wanna-be Guardsman with a mental disorder, say epilepsy or schizophrenia, be allowed to join the IG?

To answer the first, it would depend greatly on what kind of priest or inquisitor got to that soldier first. Some might investigate it, others might apply a bolt pistol asprin to the guy's head.

As for the second, unlikely. Guardsmen are raised as a tithe from planets, and if the raised regiments are found to be wanting, the planet's governor is on the receiving end of an execution, so they do their best to weed out anyone with obvious mental disabilities during selection. Not saying it is impossible, but it is not very likely at all.

If it was a Space Marine, he'd probably just end becoming a Chaplain. As for the Guardsmen, depends on who found him first. I'd imagine however Ecclesiarchy that's worked with the Sisters of Battle would probably believe him, and honestly I doubt the memetic execution would actually happen.

Killing a guy who might be a living saint is really bad business.

The Ordo Hereticus and the Sisters of Battle excel at uncovering the truth behind such phenomenon. This is, in fact, one of the main jobs of the Ordo Hereticus, and people like the Guardsman in our example may be determined to be Saints. Or they may, in fact, be determined to be nascent psykers who are manifesting their powers for the first time, and are hearing whispers out of the Warp, which are probably daemons, and so it's off to the Black Ships for them.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

And it should be noted that them uncovering the truth from a potential Living Saint/psyker/what have you is not a pleasant or nice process.
