So, I'm trying to get into infinity, I have only played one match so far and it was some time ago, But a friend has models and we might start playing again (And I hope so) But I need to pick a faction.. The problem is, Allt eh factions have awesome models.. The factions that I like the looks of the most is probably PanOceania, Yu Jing, Combined Army and Tohaa.. I have a few models from Haqqislam that I traded some Magic cards for just so I could try the game but I'm not sure I like that faction.. Nomads has a few models I like but I dont like them as much, And while Ariadna are cool, My friend plays them so I want something diferent...

Hmm.. Aleph might be intresting too..

The "Pokemon syndrom" is the biggest problem of this game. You might proksy some minis to try out diffrent factions and their playstyle.

Or let your inner geek make the decision. I went purely based on aestetics and never looked back. Mech-samurais, cyber ninjas, sci-fi bikers, infiltraiting heavy powered armours, and transorming robots were a no brainer for me

Oh! Another question, I'v seen that there is a two player starter box for Infinity that contains the new third edition rule book, Is this the only way to get it, Or will they release it as an actual book aswell? If so, When?

"Operation Icestorm" is the two player starer. It contains quick start rules, which are very simplified rules for 3 ed. Actual rulebook will be relased when 3 ed officialy kicks in, and it will be around end of 2014.

Infinity has subfactions called 'sectorials' which group together themed units into lists and reward the player with a couple of perks you don't get if you just use the entire faction.

Two of the current PanOceania sectorials actually have the perk of including an Aleph unit or two: Neoterra can have Devas and Garudas, and Acontecimento can have Nagas.

So if you like PanO, but find the idea of some Aleph stuff interesting, then you could do worse than getting hold of Operation Icestorm (includes Fusiliers, which are the basic Neoterran guys), the Neoterran starter (contains a useful mix of medium and heavy infantry) and the Auxilia box (an alternative to fusiliers, they're slightly worse but come with a linked robot each), then maybe a Deva (really good hacker option).

I'm in a similar boat - starting buying a few bits back in June (I think), then heard the news about N3 so decided to wait for that before learning the rules (so I didn't have to learn one set then the other).

Still, it's given me enough time to amass about 40 minis, and get started on painting them (about halfway through so far!).

Honestly, I would start learning the rules from Operation: Icestorm if you get that. It will be less of a steep learning curve when the full rulebook for 3rd edition arrives. You can get the core mechanics down pat (which are more than enough to have fun with the game) before you start throwing in special abilities and skills.

If you didn't want to buy the whole box set, think there are a few bits sellers (inc. on this forum) who were offering to sell the starter book separately.

Well, I dont have money for Operation: Icestorm myself currently, And my friend dont have money either so we cant get it for a while. But we are considering getting it once we both have money. If not we might put togetehr for the rule book when it comes out instead. And I realy dont like importing stuff, And the Infinity scene here isent so big so you normaly dont see Infinity stuff up on the second hand market..

Some things are going to change in N3.

Combined Army. There's going to be a new starter in December. They are XCOM aliens, access to some really advanced and alien technology.

Dossier of the new starter.

Tohaa. Faction with strong synergy and strong solo specialists. They're unique with their biotechnology, you do miss on classic mechanical machinery such as REM and standard hackers. It doesn't mean that much at the moment, but it might be more relevant in the future.

PanOceania. Well rounded faction with some rather specialised units. It focuses on higher end of the technology so you miss out on lower tech gadgets. Faction with the most diverse TAG options.

Yu-Jing. Similar to PanOceania but with less technological gizmos and more lower tech options. Faction with CC martial artists and diverse heavy infantry.

Some generic stuff about the factions (although with each new release most factions are pretty flexible):

Generic Observations:

Pan-O - Above average ballistic stats. Lots of TAGs and Heavy Infantry that are really good.

Yu-Jing - Above average CC. Has some good camo units and very solid light and medium infantry. Lots of mobility options.

Ariadna - Lots of access to Camo very cheap light and medium infantry that are fast. While not high tech they still have access to a lot of weapon choices. Werewolves replace TAGs essentially.

Haqqislam - Combined arms approach with above average PH values. Lots of access to template weapons, doctors and engineers and some regen. Some really excellent elite camo units.

Combined Army - Tend to be elite due to cost. Lots of unique weaponry. Morats in N3 will never run away. Shaasvastii have unique deployment and lots of stealth and some ace impersonation. Avatar is arguably one of the best TAGs in the game. Sepsitor can be really strong. Very strong choices but expensive points-wise.

Nomads - Like hackers? This is your faction. Excellent hackers and remotes. Really solid medium infantry choices.

Aleph - Above average stats and good defenses. Some really strong sectoral choices and characters. Efficient specialist choices. High points cost in general making them feel elite.

Tohaa - Can use 3 man link teams without being in a sectoral. Viral weaponry. Symbiont armor can be a drawback when facing flame attacks.

So far, its been revealed that Shooting ranges, Hacking and Close Combat are getting a boost while template weapons seem to be slightly nerfed as they are more easily dodged although they now ignore partial cover. The morat rule has changed that they always provide regular orders even when in retreat or loss of lieutenant.
