With the only named Iron Hands character being Vaylund Cal (Sons of Medusa), who I don't particularly like, I've been coming up with names for names for my dudes, 40K being about YOUR DUDES after all (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Your_dudes). I've been pretty lazy and used a list of famous engineers from wikipedia, but they can be made to sound pretty good.

For example:

Iron Father Medes, Forge Master of the 3rd Company (mee-dees, named after Archimedes)

Captain Muradi, 3rd Company Commander

Vereran Sergeant Issigon, junior commander within 3rd Company

And so on. I'd like to write a whole structured Index Astartes about my chapter, but I doubt it would be read.

Anyway, has anyone else been nerding it up and naming your dudes? How do you pick names, for awesomeness or themes? What rank level do you go down to? And what names do you give them? This is not necessarily limited to Space Marines, anyone can throw it out there.

I just think up random names. Usually taking a name I know and adding a funny ending. Like my Chapter Master Thassarios. Aka thassarian from wow just with ios added xD. My chapters chief librarian Kaliko. Chief Apothecary Austinius. Chief Chaplin Tylarius. So on and so forth. Last 2 names are actually my sons' names lol

I try and pick some fake-icus latinus when I name my space marines most of the time. I recently named one for a narrative campaign I'm going to do. Agregos captain of the 5th company is my latest one. I generally don't go to a lower rank. Hopefully the more games and stuff I play I'll be able to name more of them.

My method of naming is either taking the first name that comes to my head when I see the finished model, or staring a the models posture and facial expressions to find a name or nickname. Ex. Company Comander Hooly or "Throwy" to name a few.

I have a naming convention that I have for my guardsmen, and if I need a name, I just follow that.

I don't usually name minis though, excepting the ones I need for narration, which tends to be relegated to officers and special characters.

I thought I may have nerded out a bit much. In 3rd I had what I thought was a competitive Flesh Tearers list that actually got tabled in a small tournament against a better Black Templar list and then by Ulthwe starcannon spam. Coming back I have moved to fluffy stuff, some of which like my Iron Sentinels is homebrew, and narrative games that involve a third player as a GM controlling a small neutral faction, that sot of thing to make the games tell a story.

Not being able to get many games in I sometimes crank the nerd in me up a few notches

For my Daemons, I like to give a suitable name to each actual daemonic character, (Greaters, Princes & Heralds), and also I've given every unit it's own name as well...

Tzeentch's boys are:
The Lord of Change, --------- Doomscribe, The Feathered Fatechanger, Tzeentch’s Malice
The Daemon Prince, --------- Spirit Swallower, The Great Woebringer, Tzeentch’s Burning Emissary

My Tzheralds, ---------- The Burning Omen, Scribe of Destinies, Tzeentch’s Prognositcar
----------- Blazing Brightwind, The Golden Mutator, Tzeentch’s Word
----------- The Great Reborn One, Darkling Doombringer, Timewither
----------- The Altered One, Accursed Conjurer, Tzeentch’s Deciever
----------- The False Prophet, Blessed Warpweaver, Tzeentch’s Stormcaller

The Soul Grinder 'Spiritblaze’, The Flameforged, Bringer of the Firestorms, Tzeentch’s Lost Child

Bwahahaha! Right, like I'm going to *really* spill the beans on my Daemons' True Names?! Foolish mortals!

For my Knight house I took the Dynasty line from a famous Swedish monarchy line, specifically those who fought in the 30 years war, Vasa and the Faction leader being Baron Gustavus for Gustavus Adolphus. Lord Gars for the errant, gars being the name Gustavus took when he wanted to go out on patrols and fight alongside his men. Then there is Lord Torstensson for the Paladin.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Every one of my marines will eventually have a name, cataloged equipment, a list of honors and a reference number for easy accessibility.

In choosing, I use rpg name generators and see what appeals to me, bearing in mind that the salamanders use syllable apostrophe syllable format from time to time.

Kudos to you for taking on the commitment to do the big lore write up.

Since Crimson Fists seem to favor Spanish names, I have taken to naming many of my marines Spanish names. I haven't gone through the trouble naming more than just my Captain (Alejandro Torres), Dreadnought (Brother Julio), and my sergeants (Tactical Squad 1 - Juan Alvares, Tactical Squad 2 - Marco Savales, Devastator Squad - Bernardo Ortega, Scout Squad - Jose Vega). I may go through the trouble of naming the rest at some point, especially the veterans in the Command Squad (and the Apothecary), the Sternguards, and the Honor Guard for Pedro Kantor.

Sometimes, I'll name a model if I model or convert it soecifically for that purpose. For example my sarge with the shovel is the shoveler from mystery men.
Otherwise, they dont get names till after they earned it. When I have a guy who always does well or seems to be the one las cannon guy who always kills the tanks or something like that they EARN a name. Till then, they are just guys.

1) Create an IG army with 200+ infantry.
2) Create a name, personality and backstory for every model.
3) Whenever one of your models is killed, insist that you be allowed to play The Last Post and read their eulogy before continuing.
4) Wonder aloud why a rulebook appears to be sticking out of your forehead.
5) ?????
6) Profit.
