Subject: Looking for advice on how this guy painted his Wave Serpents

I really love this guys wave serpents;
How on earth did he get his reds to clean? I do 2-3 layers of crazy watered down red and it still comes up kind of gunky sometimes (I'm using a wet palette as well)
Also the highlights on his blacks look incredible as well, any advice on how to do those like that? It looks like the model is also Matte'd but I can't be sure.

This is the dude that did them;

That is about all I can offer. I would have to guess airbrush and/or wet blending - it is a beautiful job.

Try painting the red sections white first. A few coats of white until it's fairly flat, then start layering on red.
Layering red over black is a major pain. It will take more than 2 or 3 very thinned coats to make it look right.

Looks like Mephiston Red Base over black primer to me... even very thinned that paint covers quite well. Probably a few thin coats, then the layer highlights. Definitely doesn't look like airbrush work to me.

Looking at it, the link I posted links to each of the WIP threads, this is his "quick" painted army...
Red:
- basecoat with a mix of VMC Carmine Red and VMC German Camo Black Brown (4:1 or something like that). You will need 2-3 diluited layers.
In order to save time, for large models I sprayed the models solid red using a "generic" red acrylic water-based paint (NOT enamel), then basecoated it once with the mix mentioned above.
- highlighed it with VMC Carmine Red.
- highlighted it with a mix of VMC Carmine Red and Citadel Blazing Orange (I don't remember the exact ratio). Let it dry and add more Blazing Orange to the mix for the next highlights until it looks good.
Yellow (the one used for Fire Dragons):
- basecoat with 2-3 layers of VMC Medium Flesh
- shade with a mix of VMC Medium Flesh and VMC German Camo Black Brown
- highlight with a mix of VMC Medium Flesh and VMC Ivory (3:1 more or less). Add more Ivory for the next highlights until it looks good to you.
Bone (the one used for the Wraithguards):
- basecoat with a mix of VMC German Camo Black Brown, VMC Dark Grey, and VMC Ivory (1:1:2 or something like that)
- add more Ivory to the mix for the highlights.
This is for a grey bone, if you want a yellowish bone you can add some VMC Medium Flesh to the Ivory (like I did for the Farseer)
