As the title suggests my significant other is looking into starting a fantasy army. in d&d she normally plays elves and the like. she saw the elf armies and went ooo shiny so i humbly ask the dakka community what would be the better buy for a stater box of the elves. She likes shooty and magic and i know all three of them do that well.... and again shes a super noob, if dakka could guide me into getting her a good bday present well that would be awesome. there only stipulation i know of is she wants it to be fairly shooty from what weve talked about. but i want her to be able to do a bit of every thing in all the phases so she can experience the game ya know?
any qway thanks for the help folks.

Dark Elf set. More pew pew per model than either of the other two. And you get a chariot bolt thrower that's S7.

Wood elves are also really solid. Most of the treefolk (dryads, treemen, treekin) got nerfed so you probably want to avoid them. They're not awful but they all lost a strength so they don't hit nearly as hard.
There's a ton of competitive choices among the elves though. Their shooting units are pretty brutal en masse, and wild riders are arguably one of the best units in the game.
They also have access to all 8 rulebook lores as well as both high AND dark magic.

cool cool, thats good well what i was thinking for getting her cause i let her pick the models as you know they are hers and all. are glade guard, warhawk riders and some sisters of thorn and a wizard to start. and she really likes these ones. me i play dwarfs vampires and brets so im not sure how any of her units play i know they get crazy arrows and thats about it.

Warhawk riders are great for getting around the flanks and hit super hard. Sisters of the Thorn are good for a wizard bunker, since they will be very hard to catch. Glade guard are probably your best option for troops in terms of cost and effectiveness.
Looks like she has pretty good instincts! I don't envy her assembling warhawk riders, though.

Wood elves have strong movement and shooting. Close combat is to be mostly avoided if you play them.
Best buys are probably waywatchers (if you can get the bitz I suggest you use shadow warriors arms on wyldwood ranger bodies - cheaper alternative), glade guard, sisters of the thorn/wild riders, wizards, great eagles. I don't think a lot of people play without at least some of those units.

Well, your entire wood elf army should be mounted, but that's a discussion for another time.
As for a mounted caster, stick a sister of the thorn on an elven steed.

Whaaaat ? You mean ... we should play it as if it was a game ? And have FUN instead of just trying to utterly crush our opponents by twisting the rules in a stupid way and always taking the (so-called) "best" choices ?

I fail to see the points you're both making. Are you suggesting that I allow my opponents to have fun against me? That goes against all my instincts.

He means to say that not everyone is WAAC. As in, there are some people (I know you have never heard of them) who actually will include units in their army that isn't the best because God forbid, they look nice.

No, 3+, but she could 'count-as' it as a Noble on Great Eagle until she can afford a couple more models to make a squadron.

I am also a lady who fell in love with the Sisters of Thorn models the moment I laid eyes on them. I decided to start building and playing Wood Elves right then and there, lol.
