Dazzle camouflage is pretty neat looking and I've always dreamed of building a WWI-era ship model and painting in dazzle camo. Here is some more cool pictures:

I have a WW1 era ship painted in dazzle camo. Unfortunately it is 1/3000 scale and therefore only a bit over 1 inch long. It is the aircraft carrier version of Furious, that I converted from the battlecruiser model.

Imperial War Museum has launched a range of "dazzle" goods recently.

With the advent of 1/8" and 1/16th" Tamiya masking tape, this seems like a good time to make your dream a reality if you want to go for the "array of lines" one.

They must have been something to see in person.

So... they made a "flicker field" in real life? COOL BEANS!

I used naval cammo as inspiration for my 15mm OGRE MKIII:





It seemed fitting for a 'land battleship' to use that type of pattern.

That hurts to look at. But then again, I suppose that's entirely the point. It's hard to put a torpedo into a target when you can't tell which way it's going, how fast its moving, which side is facing you, or just what the heck it is supposed o be.

i think its to break up the silhouette. While up close it kinda looks ridiculous, imagine looking at it from 4-8 miles away and trying to locate it properly. You would have to solely rely on the steam trail to find and hit it.

I think tanks had a similar pattern during that time too.

I love obnoxious paint schemes haha.

Although very cool, I'll be honest. When I opened the thread my expectations were for a far more colorful "camo" scheme and a completely different topic.

My friend painted his Dystopian Wars prussians in that 'stripes' style razzle dazzle.

I did something similar with my EotBS, except I had white with red 'sun rays'

see my gallery for w.i.p. of my battleships.

Dazzle opens up a lot of great options for SF wargamers.

I ought however to add that it wouldn't work in spaced age or moderns combat.

Dazzle works by making it difficult to judge speed and bearing by eye. This matters a lot of you have to judge where to aim a torpedo, but doesnt make the blindest difference if you have a laser pointer or matter much for something with comparatively little deflection like a rocket launcher or cannon..

Dazzle however has the opposite effect to normal camoflage and makes the target easier to see, just confusing to interpret. Hence why it was used for warships in the era prior to modern computer guided munitions. It wouldn't work now and was never relevant for tanks.

Don't let that stop you using Dazzle for your IG, Ogre or SF starship miniatures though. Its a great excuse to make original and distinctive colour schemes while maintaining some logic to them.

For Dystopian Wars it would probably work and be a practical idea, its very popular for KoB paint schemes

At the school where I worked at the time a student built a battle ship in workshop class. I taught him about razzle dazzle camo, and suggested he'd paint it that way. It ended up dead cool, wish I still had the picture of it.

I thought that the wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots.
