Hey guys, working on a lab write-up and it sucks, but I'm listening to tunes which is great. Currently, my favorite (nearly) unheard of band is a tie between Brand New and Meriwether. A friend of a friend actually turned me on to Brand New and I heard Meriwether one day on a podcast. Who's your guys' favorite and how'd you hear of them?

I discovered Gogol Bordello via the soundtrack to the movie Wristcutters: A Love Story. It was so different to what I was used to that at first my wife and just mocked it for fun. But it grew, and grew.
THEY ARE AMAZING!
We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

I agree. Kind of an odd thread title, no? Maybe something like "Favorite Obscure Band?" would be a better fit?
I wouldn't necessarily consider Brand New to be an "unheard of band"... I mean, they're signed to Interscope and have a Certified Gold album, so clearly people are listening to them!
All kidding aside, I don't really have a "favorite," but there is a now-defunct band from Harrisonburg, VA called Gifts From Enola that I really enjoy.

Oh god. Yes, Gogol Bordello is something to behold if you like them, I would recommend checking out the Aquabats too

Touche. I still consider them semi obscure in terms of radio play/attention they get in my area

One band I really like is The Temperance Movement, a Scottish blues-rock band that exist in the same sort of style as the classics like Free, Led Zepp and a bit of the Rolling Stones. Here's their first EP with their best stuff on it, any fans of blues/rock do give it a listen, you won't be dissapointed.
One of my favourite obscure bands tracks:
It's OK by Delirious
Delirious are one of the most talented Christian rock bands, and are well known in the Christian music scene, which means its obscure. Christian popular music is often very professional, but due to its nature it gets very little air time.
A number of artists know they probably would have 'made it' if they left their faith out of it, and in many cases this was the case.
Not all of the songs of Christian bands are religious in nature, including the track above..
Other bands to look out for are Petra, Three Crosses, Caedmon's Call and many others. Though I liast only the 90's bands, being out of touch with the genre.
Still from what little I know of the latest generation the Chrisitan music scene has kept its quality, unlike the decline in quality in mainstream music.
My favourite specifically religious track above, very moving:
Close of Autumn by Caedmons Call
Come Like You Promised by Delirious (Live and In The Can version)
A fun one, very spontaneous. Delirious were/are great live. Vocals were unpolished then, but the Revivalist subgenre has its own unique buzz and this is a very good example of it.
The extended track here, is spontaneous music, with a Charismatic ethos to it, meaning that the musicians carry on ad lib spiritually as a form of communion with God. The above song is best described in laymans terms as a from of direct spiritual contact. Many Christian bands perform live music this way, and the genre of charismatic music is commonplace to the genre but exceptionally rare elsewhere. Its a bit like the Spirit of '69, but on every performance.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.
See, I would list Breaking Benjamin as the most obscure band I listen to. I've only ever met three people who've heard of them, and I've been in a fair number of bands these last few years.
... on the other hand, I'm not sure they're very hipster, given that they've apparently sold over 5 million albums.

DakkaRank Comment: I sound like a Power Ranger.
TFOL and proud. Also a Forge World Fan.
I should really paint some of my models instead of browsing forums.
Serenity is probably the most obscure band I listen to, but I've no idea if I simply don't know anyone who listens to them, or there aren't many who do to start with.
I'd provide a video but I'm on mobile at the moment.
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I asked you to go to the Green Day concert. You said you never heard of them...
How cool is that?

A million billion thank you's for introducing me to Steam Powered Giraffe. Good lord...it's just so...beautiful.

I recently discovered Puscifer. To me, then, they were a bit obscure...for anyone who doesn't know, this is one of the 3 (or more?) side projects that Maynard from Tool has going.
And then there is CALABRESE
Horror rockabilly!
They're huge Danzig fans, if you couldn't tell.....I also like that they have quite a fun sense of humor, as this video shows
