What makes you decide the Chapter or warband of Chaos Space Marines you create, build, paint and fight with?

Is it the fluff, the imagery, their devotion to their god or Chaos itself, their popularity, or just because you want them to be different to all the other CSM's at your FLGS?

What's the most obscure CSM warband you have, or have fought against?

I chose mine (Alpha Legion) because I like the fluff and paint theme. I could also go from nonworshppers to zealots anytime.
My 2nd army is AM so it was easy to ally with back in the day, now I use IA13 renegade list for that.

Most obscure force I've built is warband of "Clonelord", with 6 Dark Vengeance Chaos Lords posing as Clonelord and his retinue of Chosen all armed with plasma pistol & CCW (Lord with power sword). Lord has different colored glow in his sword for obvious reason.

Black Legion for the fluff. Badasses who actually want to see the Galaxy burn. The 'join us or die' attitude they have to other, weaker Legions. And of course, those sexy colours.

And Abaddon too. Have always liked that guy.

I really like the fluff for all Legions... Couldn't decide on a single one so, in the end I decided to do all of them. Plus I really like the old images from back in the day of CSM forces all united and looking cool.

So I take a Legion, think of what that Legion is famous for and paint the appropriate squads. For example I have; Night Lords Raptors, Emperor's Children Noise Marines, Plague Marines from the Deathguard and The Purge. Most of my vehicles are Iron Warriors, I have Lords from many different Legions, when it comes to vanilla marines most of them are Black Legion but I will be doing other Legions and lesser known warbands in the future.

I find this way that CSM look better on the table and it reminds me of all the cool things I saw in WD all those years ago.

I picked Thousand Sons because wizards are cool.

I then later on rebuilt my entire chaos army to be a homebrew cult warband because I decided that Magnus is a douche.

If I were to ignore the righteous light of the Emprah and become a traitorous dog to chaos then I would definitely pick whatever warband Kharn is from and just do him with a bunch of zerkers.

I like all things dark, creepy and undead, as well as humorous. Nurgle is great for easy modeling; broken bits, missing parts, only good at single-tone drybrush? No problem, grab some kneadatite and minwax and your army will look amazing with very little work. Plus most people would agree Nurgle is the easiest god in the CSM dex to min-max. Thus my mind was made up; I definitely was NOT playing Nurgle. Chaos is all about defying expectations after all...

I wanted something to challenge my painting skills that would force me to get better. I picked Slaanesh because of the old RT fluff, where she was basically Lady Gaga and Cthulhu put together with an army of drugged-crazed heavy metal rockers. Her aesthetic allows for a wide range of customization while still maintaining a central theme. Her units offer more tactical complexity than any other power's.

If I ever get back into the game, there's a neat Undivided idea I've been kicking around; I'd probably do a corrupted version of each Imperial Codex;
SM = CSM
Guard = Heretics and Renegades
Sisters of Slaanesh lead by Miriael Sabathiel
Inquisitors counts-as Word Bearers
Blood Angels counts-as Vampiric Night Lords
Grey Knights counts-as Knights of Malal
Fallen Angels
Wolves of Khorne
Iron Warriors Assault Vanguard
Dark Mechanicus
Subjugator Knights, ect

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

My name might be Nurgle, but I like Iron Warriors the most.
Seigecraft is how I play my 40k games and I like it that way.

Also I feel bad for Pert. He was the child that was never loved by the Emprah and instead just thrown aside to do his own thing.

TOO MUCH CHAOS!!!

Inboud...

I've always had an interest in the 13th Black Crusade (the first global campaign I took part in).

All my armies revolve around this conflict- Relictors Space Marines, Cadian XV Airborne, Black Legion, the Lost and the Damned, and Daemons.

Nothing looks better than the combined forces facing off against each other in the final battle for the 41st millennium.

Of the original legions the Iron Warriors are by far my favourite so I have a decently sized force of them. Now I've also begun a dark wolves of Skyrar army since I like the wolves but hate their colours.

My armies:
vior'la sept 12k
Erik Morkai's great company 6k
dark mechanicus, the dearth of hope, 8k
rothwyr morwan's company 1,5k
Adeptus custodes 2k
AoS, The forgotten order, SE, 3k

For me it was the fluff, but obviously paint scheme comes into it. For me it goes
1: Fluff (this includes strategy and tactics, as I like "fluffy" armies)
2: Paint job. Self-explanatory.
3: Popularity. I like playing less-played factions.

I've only fought Iron Warriors, Knights of Blood and Skulltakers, a homebrew Khornate warband.

Hang on... How have we ended up doing the exact same armies in order with the same plans?!
