I have never based and was never planned on doing it but now I am tired of little black circles under my guys so I would like to base my armies. The closest I am to trying to base my models is with painting the bases. I'm perfectly fine for that with my Space Wolves, I just paint the bases white and I'm happy with that. But for my Chaos Space Marines I want to do something more than just painting their bases and I want to progress my mini skills. So the scheme for my CSM is kinda an off brand Black Legion. A lot of black with little traces of black and silver for the trim work. So if any ideas of stuff I should use at all would be greater. I am new to basing so go easy on me

A silver ink pen will let you very easily put on markings and "writing".

Basing is a wonderful way to improve the overall look of your models with only a tiny bit of work!
The easiest way to base is to just paint on the citadel basing paint, which is kind of like gritty, gelatinous goop. It dries to whatever shape you push it into, and you can paint, wash, and drybrush it to look quite decent.
Or, you can spread PVA glue onto your model and just dunk it into a tub of sand (or ballast, such as from Woodland Scenics). Give it time to dry, then paint and wash it.
To give it a lot more zing, a rock and a couple of grass tufts or some static grass will greatly improve the overall look. A small chip of cork can also be painted to look like wood.
It really doesn't take much, and the models look much more finished! These literally took 5 minutes to base -- not that they're anything spectacular, but you can see that it doesn't take a lot to improve on a plain plastic base:

Ok, I was thinking something like a rubble and ash type base, Chaos comes and kills, leaves it to rubble.

I highly suggest getting a roll of cork from your havorite hobby store. You can get a lifetime supply for like 7 bucks, and they look great. Quite a few tutorials use them as well, and they are quite easy.

Nice and simple.
PVA glue
Apply small rocks (smash some in the garden with a hammer, buy small rocks from any decent miniature site
Apply Sand
Dry
Prime Black
Dry Brush grey.
If you want to get more complicated add in some spares from your sprues. With chaos you should have a tonne of spare helmets, trophies and shoulderpads you can battle damage and half bury in the sand.
Ends up looking like this:

So I practice basing on two bases than I went to Abbadon. I think it turned out great, just need a lighter or go over really light with a white. What do you guys think?

Looks good, but don't go straight to white for the drybrush. Use a medium grey and see how it looks first.

I did something similar for my blood angels to what you're doing now, start with the darkest grey you own, then a mid. grey, wash with nuln oil, then a light white drybrush, I think it looks good.

Thanks guys! What I did for Abaddon and the 1st two Chosen was apply then paint the base a dark grey than moved onto the light grey. What I'm doing now with the next 4 Chosen and my Sorcerer is basing the bases black, thane apply the grey paints. Automatically Appended Next Post: So I did the base black, apply the dark grey than dried brush the light grey. I like the outcome, I will post pictures.
