Subject: So I'm finally making a Space Marine army. What chapter should I go with?

I've played Orks for almost a year now, and I've finally started collecting models for a space marine army. At this current point I have two tactical squads with sergeants, five terminators, a librarian, a captain, and a dreadnought.
I'm not sure what chapter to focus with, and I honestly don't have the time or patience to learn about each individual one. My friend thinks I should do Minotaurs, since he plans on using them and then we could share our models, but I'm not sure. I mostly like explosions and big dakka, one reason why I like the Orks. But since I'll actually be able to shoot something for once, I'd like to make a bigger use of it.
So basically, I love template weapons, and I enjoy there being a nice amount of meat on the field for me to shoot with, and I love humor and silly things . I heard about the Angry Marines, which I really like the idea of, because they make me laugh, but I've learned that they're unofficial, and not updated to 7th anyway. I don't really care too much about psychic powers. Walkers are great fun, and it'd be nice to have a tank that can actually hit something without having to resort to crashing into it.

If you love Template Weapons, go with Salamanders.

For lots of tanks/ big choppy characters, go for the Iron Hands. They're black, so easy to paint and are (in my opinion) the coolest aesthetically, being essentially cyborgs.

You could just do your own chapter. The fluff states there are 1,000 of them, after all, and so few have been described or even named. Means you can come up with whatever paint scheme, combat doctrines and background story you feel like. Personally I think it's boring how many just choose one of the nine first founding chapters when there's so much room for creativity.

I wouldn't even know how to begin doing that. I'd have to figure out the rules for doing that first. Can I just pick what they're good at and they get more of those or something?

Nobody really has a problem with you painting your models taxicab yellow and using the salamander or dark angel lists. Or, for that matter, painting space wolves models black and calling them whatever you want to call them. However, most people will have a problem with you pointing to a bolter and saying that it's a hand flamer
Insignia and company name are not important, but the weapon configuration is. On the other hand, if it's important for you to match fluff, buying Dark Vengeance boxes isn't going to help you build Space Wolves any, unless you are really handy with a dremel tool! (those damn snapfit shoulders...) Price *usually* matters at least to some extent too!

You could do Salamanders, they get master-crafted flamers/meltas. For dakka, you could take IF for their re-rolling bolt weapons.

I agree, just go homebrew. That way you have flexibility between different codex founding chapters. Siciborminiatures makes great shoulders and other stuff to make your chapter more unique.
|
Sometimes, you just gotta take something cause the model is freakin cool... |

I would recommend coming up with your own chapter. That way you'll be more invested in them, because they're truly your own creation. Plus, you can just pick whichever chapter tactic you feel like using and even use them as other power-armored factions, like SW, BA or even CSM!
Just come up with a badass sounding name that hints at their specialty, some colors you'll enjoy painting and maybe a li'l bit of backstory for your sergeants, captains and chapter masters. It's that easy.

Oh, so you don't make your own chapter tactics then? You just make up their colors and fluff and choose one set of tactics?
That's too bad, I was kinda hoping I could make a chapter that that likes to blow everything up and only scatters for half or something. Still sounds cool.

You could make your own chapter tactics - I think Miniwargaming have their own Chapter Tactics (but they forget about them all the time xD)
They would obviously have to be balanced and you would likely have to obtain your opponents permission since they are not official GW rules.

Making your own chapter is a blast, even if it's just an offshoot of an existing one. That way, you can paint it however you want, and use whichever chapter tactics.
Also, you can make up your own bad*** fluff!

I almost want to tell you go Black Templars. They have an amazing look to them and very rich with lore. Easy to paint and their characters are tough as hell in challenges. Re-Roll to hit and cause rending. I roll with a chapter master, relic blade and SS or Shield Eternal and he rolls through most non-special characters.
But, I would say make up your own chapter or choose something that can draw back to a first founding. Take a look into some of the forge world chapters and their traits. Here take a look!
