so as a graduation gift to myself (like i need one) i am trying to build myself a custom Horus Heresy Chess Set.. with Imperium V. Chaos... clearyl the emporer and horus will represent the kings... but from there im open to debate... knowck yourselves out... lemme hear it!!!

also once i finalize the pieces ill commission them out to someone

Will this be a standard chess board? if so, I'm thinking Custodes as Bishops, Some kind of Rogal Dorn look-alike as Queen. Or maybe Sanguinious as Quees since he's so feminie and sparkly. Dark Angels as knights, for fluff reasons, and Imperial Fists as rooks? Then a line of IG as pawns. Just a thought.

Hmmm... cultists or chaos spawn for Horus' pawns. 1k Sons Sorcerers for his bishops. Khornate berserkers for knights. Rooks I'm still thinking....something from Nurgle to compete the Chaos quartet?

King- Emporer
Queen- Loyalist Primarch (of your picking)
Bishop- Custodes
Knights- some sort of Chaplain/Librarian or possibly Sister of Silence
Rook- Dreadnaught
Pawns- IG or simple SM

Chaos
King- Horus
Queen- Chaos Primarch
Bishop- Dark Mechanicum
Knights- Warp demon/ slanesh or tzeencht
Rook- chaos dread
pawns- chaos cultist

For the queen, the only ones that would make sense as regal loyalists are Rowboat Girlyman or Dorn. And Angron for Chaos.... ooooh or Mortarion. That would be wicked.

The bishop should be a chaplain, or perhaps a librarian. For knights, use actual knights - the epic models are roughly the same size as 28mm models. Custodes make rooks. Some kind of Malcador model for the Queen. Then either regular marines or guardsmen for pawns.

For pawns, maybe choose the legions which went to chaos/stayed loyal. Well 16 legions so pick favorites.

8 each ie so like lining up the hersey in there respective colours.

King: Emperor and Horus
Queen: Sanguinius and Fulgrim
King Side Bishop: Lorgar and Guilliman
Queen Side Bishop: Alpharius and Lion El'Johnson
Kside Knight: Khan and Magnus
Qside Knight: Corax and Kurze
Kside Rook: Perturabo and Dorn
Qside Rook: Vulkan and Mortarion
White Pawns: Ferrus Manus and Leman Russ
Black Pawns: Angron

ok well now comes my next question... who is someone that can make these middles out of bits.. FW's primarchs are way to large... Im not worried about the size of the board i can always alter and make that... but i do want the peices to be generally uniform in size...

Mine was more of a dream team list.

If you want uniform sizes and stuff, go with Legions.

Kings: Blood Angels and Sons of Horus
Queens: Imperial Fists and Emperor's Children
Bishops: Dark Angels, Ultramarines, Word Bearers, Alpha Legion
Knights: White Scars, Raven Guard, Night Lords, Thousand Sons
Rooks: Iron Hands, Salamanders, Iron Warriors, Death Guard
Pawns: Space Wolves, World Eaters.

You'll need 32 models, or 3 Tactical Squads plus 2 more. You could pick up FW armour marks from bitz vendors for cheap. If you are doing full on HH style, use the following

Mk II: Ultramarines, Dark Angels, White Scars
Mk III: Iron Hands, Space Wolves, Death Guard, Iron Warriors
Mk IV: Blood Angels, Sons of Horus, Emperor's Children, Word Bearers, Alpha Legion, Night Lords
Mk V: Ultramarines, Salamanders, White Scars, Space Wolves, Dark Angels
Mk VI: Raven Guard
Mk VII: Imperial Fists (pioneered this at the Siege of Terra).

i cant make a HH themed chess set without including Emporer and Horus... i just gottaaaa

Loyal Rooks: Imperial Fists
Traitor Rooks: Iron Warriors

This is a great idea. Just make your own mind up and don't get too pressured by the internets!
But I think Dorn as Queen and IF as Rooks.
And Fulgrim as Queen and IW as Rooks for Chaos.

Still an interesting thread, don't get me wrong, but why not be up-front about it?

Imo i wouldn't go too in depth about specific legions etc. but have more generic pieces (obviously different from each side) which don't have to be painted or anything if you don't need to. Keep empy + Horus, not sure about queens.
Then high lords of terra or custodes for bishops.
Jump pack marines for knights
Boarding marines or similar for rooks
Normal space marines for pawns

Then just change the main ones for the chaos side like daemons for bishops etc.

Or you could choose eight primarchs as eight pawns...

well in response to your question, the thought that I will construct and put together this board is in fact building a custom chess set. Yes, I will use certain premade GW/FW pieces but also I may want or need assistance with creating certain chars (custodes and maybe sis of silence)

so im not asking anyone to build it for me... just some help and direction...

and if you look at my earlier statement, I need helping building the Mid Chars.. such as the king and queen... which will be emperor/dorn and horus/lorgas most likely...these are minis that are not out yet by GW/FW. atleast not to the sizing I need...
