SyFy is making a mini-series version of the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: The Year We Make Contact. It is written by the same guy who wrote G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, I Frankenstein, and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with Ridley Scott doing some type of producing role. How could anyone not love such a thing?

You know what I'd like more, a remake of Caligula...
mind you it'd leave out the classic scene of two lesbians peeing on a corpse so... hollywood would definitely ruin it!
I'll watch this though!

That sounds great and all, but why doesn't "Syfy" (terrible name change...) do one even better and bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000?

They are actually still doing it, just not on TV.

Don't forget Cinema Titanic, which has the rest of the original cast and actually watch bad movies. Rifftrax can be funny but they mock everything whether good or bad, which is kind of 'meh' to me.

Oooh, I did not know about that. I will say that Mike is probably my favorite, which is probably why I like Rifftrax, and I only ever watch their B movie ones so I don't get riff-fatigue or whatever the proper term would be.

I was jazzed until you said SyFy and the guy who wrote GO Joe. Now I'm sad.

There is no shortage of terrible movies.
Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic are both cool, but they aren't the same as MST3K.

This.
2001 was so far ahead of it's time that to think a cable channel remake can do it justice is asinine.

I'm sure the SciFi (I refuse to spell it the stupid way) will do just as good a job with this novel to TV translation as they did with their version of Dune. Which is to say, they will do a hamfisted, micro budget, community theater version of the book, which will mispronounce all of the names, reduce the importance of vital characters while elevating footnotes to main character status, and otherwise fill your screen with derp.

That whole sentence doesn't have a single word in it that doesn't sound completely awful to me...

The first GI Joe film is good - at least its not that Nolan guy ruining films.

The production values weren't great, but I think the TV miniseries was easily more faithful to the material than Lynch's feature film.
I'm not that excited about 3001 just because I wasn't that enthralled with the book. I guess 2061 is getting skipped? Although I'm not sure that really matters from what I can remember of the books.
I guess a bigger question is whether the director will emulate Kubrick's artistic style, Hyams' more action-oriented style, or something different and/or in between?

That statement is true of their version of Children Of Dune, which was in all ways an excellent piece of television. Seriously, I'd watch that one again and again with zero complaints.
But Dune proper? It was like they didn't even read the book. As for the feature film, I'll take changes to plot and theme that were made with the original author's approval over the mess SciFi made of their version any day.

There's nothing wrong with a little ya hya chouhada.
But weirding modules and Paul making it rain through force of will depart wildly from the themes in the book. The Fremen won through ferocity, fervor, and desert knowledge, not because of a technological advance, fer crissakes. And Paul is highly flawed and human, the very point of the next two books.
Lynch's movie also ignored the ecological angle (the TV movie wasn't great at this either, but at least it had more presence IIRC), told us next to nothing about Fremen or Imperial culture, and dropped out events like the death of baby Leto. Hell, Paul and Chani's entire relationship was reduced to some voiceover during a montage.
Sure, Fremen losing their water discipline in the open air bugged me with the miniseries, but then Fremen wearing their *hoodless* stillsuits inside the sietch wasn't exactly right either. I don't mind Irulan's role being inflated, especially since she ends up in exactly the right place at the end. And the Baron's intelligent, calculating nature is much more on target with the miniseries than the movie, in which he's a cackling, cartoony buffoon with giant boils.
I'm a fan of David Lynch, but he simply seemed more interested in set design and gross-out scenes involving the Baron or weird cats than actually telling the friggin' story. It's a bad, bad film that wasted a great cast and some really good creative work.
