I always hear/read about the space marine gene seed being so valuable and important but I want to know what it actually does. Like, biologically. I was always under the impression it allows the body to adapt to all the implants but then I found out it was one of the last things implanted into a scout, so, I'm back to guessing. Does anyone actually know something about this? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Gene-seed is the DNA used in the creation of the implant organs, mixed with a little of the host's own DNA which makes it compatitible with the host rather than just destroyed the organ on implant. Gene-seed is literally the genetic blueprint and code used to build the structures.

Prognoid Glands are a little different. They ARE made using Geneseed, but they are not the be all and end all of it. They're role is sample the Geneseed of the host and store a genetic copy. Once extracted upon death the copy can be excavated and cloned using Stem Cells.

Gene-Seed may refer to any of the various space Marine implants individually or collectively and it is also used interchangeably as a term for the Progenoid Glands.

Prior to implantation the various matured organs are referred to as Zygotes and once a genetically compatible host has been found the Zygotes are implanted in sequence with the Progenoid Glands being the 18th of the 19 distinct organs.

The Progenoid Glands then accumulate genetic material from all of the implants, including themselves, and this material forms a Gene-Seed to correspond to each implant and are collectively referred to as the Gene-Seed and hence the Progenoid Glands themselves can be referred to as the Gene-Seed; when a Progenoid Gland is harvested it is often written as 'the Gene-Seed being harvested' et cetera which could refer either to the various Gene-Seed within the Progenoid Gland or to the Progenoid Gland itself, hence the confusion around just what Gene-Seed refers too.

These immature implants, the Gene-Seed are then stored and can be kept as such indefinitely given suitable storage conditions. When a new Space Marine is to be created these Gene-Seed are then retrieved and grown to maturity and become Zygotes and so on and so forth.
