Subject: How to Convert Old School IG Heavy Weapons?

So I'm back into the hobby after a 3 edition hiatus, so all my IG heavy weapons are old school with one weapon trooper and one loader trooper. Does anyone have a good way to convert the old metal heavy weapons into 7th edition friendly heavy weapons teams?

Get a modern HWT base.
Take the HW troopers off their bases, hack off the little metal slide, file feet flat, glue onto base.

I didn't hack the tabs off of mine; rather, I cut slots into the 60mm bases to fit the tabs. Trying to glue metals to the base doesn't work well if they are going to be moved around a lot.

The old school HWTs are still perfectly legal to use. It's the same scenario as the old metal dreadnoughts or Ogryns with square bases or the old terminators on 25mm bases. You're well within your rights to keep playing them on the bases they came with.
So unless you want to swap the HWTs out onto 60mm bases for aesthetic reasons you aren't doing anything against the rules by having the two separate models.

I've been playing without the loaders, just the heavy weapon trooper, and play him with two wounds. It gets super confusing during deployment and combat though, since I always have to remember that I technically only have 9 troopers.

Seriously?! You mean I could field this antique?
I can't imagine someone not complaining that he's not on a 40mm base I should try just to see what happens hahaha

I just magnetized mine to a 60mm base. Two 25mm bases and a heavy weapon fit easily on the 60mm, plus it makes it easier for wound purposes...just take off one dude.

For my Tallarn HWTs I just glued the gunner/weapon down and pinned/glued the loader beside him (after removing the tab of course).
The HWTs look pretty damn awesome on the 60mm bases, even my oldies.

I do it all the time. Obviously, check with your opponent/tournament organizer. There are some downsides of the small bases, as well as advantages. Sure, you have a smaller footprint for deep striking, but you can also fit the whole squad under a small blast/template. I find people are cool with the nostalgia value enough to not have an issue with the subtle changes. In any event, nobody has ever asked me to proxy a 40mm base for the squad, or play it any different the as-modeled. YMMV, I tend to hang with a fairly fun-loveing, relaxed crowd.
For old IG, there is a bit of a difference between base size issues and single vs. 2 wound models. If I was ever to modernize my old RT guard, I would re-base the support squad onto 60mm bases.

Thought I'd show you what I did with mine, took a day to grab some pics.
This is what my teams used to look like...(please ignore my 10+ year old paint scheme :S )
And here is a couple WIP shots of them on the newer bases!
EDITs: Couldn't figure out how to properly link pics, lol

Yep. Go for it. If it's an official GW model and that was the base that it came with, knock your self out.
Or if you're losing and it's a heavy model, knock your opponent out.
Or jab him in the eye with that force spear.
