This question might be very hard to answer, but I would like to know which monster from all three armybooks is the best for acting as a flank guard. I was at first looking at the Woc and beastmen monsters, but while they are cheap, they seem to lack any true hitting capability, so I considered a soulgrinder, but it has a rather large base, so it could not fit through forests and such, so what at the moment seems like the best solution, is using a character on a mount in the role of a flanking monster. As you might know, I am a bit new to this game, so please correct me if I am wrong.

idk, gorebeast chariot? and as a flank guard, chaos hounds do great for blocking and redirecting

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

All the Beastmen monsters are too expensive for what they do.

Maybe a Chimera, but they are fragile. Giants are always interesting.

Two chimerae, a Ghorgon, a Daemon Prince. and a Soul Grinder.

The Chimerae and the prince form an air squadron on one flank/the centre, and the ghorgon and the Grinder wander around together.

Chimera are great.

For approximately the same price you can get a nurgle DP with glittering scales, which does bounds more IMO. For like, 265 points you get a monster who will always be hit on 6's, sometimes 5's with characters and elites, and is an absolute baller in combat. He can hold a unit for a hammer the entire game if needed.

Gorebeast chariot is decent at the above job for about half the points, but is a bit weaker.

Aftermath can be calculated.

I would say Chimera too actually.

But he needs to be near a Daemon Prince or a Disco Lord. He has the leadership of a nervous squirrel. Odd considering his size.

Oh, you have a giant? Good luck using the worst monster in the game. Chimerae have a combat effectiveness that ranges from good to amazing. Giants range from terrible to okay. I know which I'd rather have.

I completely disagree but i wont argue with you. The giant is the most UNDERRATED monster in the game.

There is nothing underrated about a giant.

It's a monster that can have a combat phase that does nothing, slightly less than nothing, or win by 2. It also has no protection.

There is no argument though. Giant's are not underrated. There is one result on a monster with NO SAVES that means he does something other than lose combat. Which happens at his initiative. Which is low.

Giants are the worst monsters in the game, no debate.

About the chimera, how is it different from a manticore, as they are the same base model, and having a lord ride the beast would solve the babysitting problem. Although, if the chimera is the superior option, then where can I find the rules for the chimera?

Yep. Sorry Namiel but there is no debate to be had here. There's only one good reason to take a Giant and that's for the LOLs.

They are terrible.

If we are including Monsters who are also characters then the DP wins hands down.

They have seperate rules and different upgrade options however, both in the WoC book. Having a lord ride a manticore is considered sub par for the same reasons all monster-riding combat lords are, the lack of a level 4 wizard. Plus your risking a lot more if your opponent has cannons.

To be fair, a Giant getting 1-2D6 auto-hits at S6 is actually quite good.
Yell and Bawl can be okay and it can be the worst thing ever. Pick Up And... ranges from meh to awful.

He can cause some damage with Jump Up and Down, yeah. But with his T, W, lack of saves, his price tag and--the big one--his unreliability? Not worth it.

Chimeras are great. Ghorgons are decent. Soulgrinders are...weird. So tough and fragile and scary and non-threatening all rolled into one.

Daemon Princes win, of course. The Warriors one.

Let's go over what has to happen for this to actually take place.

#1 The giant has to survive a round of attacks. Unlikely against a combat unit of any merit and a fighty character.
#2 Owning player rolls a 3 on the 'Man sized enemy' table.
#3 The character fails to wound the giant to avoid being picked up. Only gets a single attack, but given Ws3 and T5 this isn't entirely unlikely.

Giant = bad. Sorry.
