Space Marine Scout with Sniper Rifle

Hello Dakka

My chums and I play regular games in which I run Iron Hands marines. We play 2000 points with my list usually consisting of Cent squad of 3 with grav, Chapter master with bike hammer and Gorgon, 2 five man tac squads in rhinos, sometimes bikers with grav guns, dev squad with 4 x lascannons and usually CC termies with TH Storm Shield in a redeemer.

One of the Chums I play against plays nids and usually takes monstrous creature spam (3x Flyerants + 3x Mawlocs or other goodness) and shrouds everything with the beauty of a 2+ cover save from his Malinthrope. any other units that are run also benefit from this amazing save.

Problem 1 - I do nothing to his flyers due to lack of AA
Problem 2 - I can ignore problem 1 but problem 2 consists of all of my armies shooting is completely negated due to 2+ cover saves

Bored is setup usually heavy with cover and ruins

Any hints on how to bring down this down?

Cheers

Pretty much agree with Wilson.

Grav Guns for MC, Blasts/Templates for Hordes. Ignore Cover works well if they have a 2+ Jink.

Try and get TL as much as possible (through Prescience or other means), TL should get more of your shots through to Flyrants.

You got to take nids apart brick by brick. If you feel that 2+ cover everywhere disallows you to shoot them down properly, focus on a venomtrophe.

Agreed - although Malanthropes are quite a bit tougher - but they're a source of shrouded and a synapse peg.

With decent cover and shrouded, killing the winged hive tyrants before they take to the air is probably unlikely.

The Mawlocs come in on your side of the board, and the tyrants will be there very shortly. That leaves the malanthrope sat lonely on his side of the board - he's not achieving very much.

Prescience to twin-link the grav cannons will give you some decent AA from the centurions, and won't cost you too much. The main issue is the mawlocs - you essentially have to take your lumps from them because you have no way to hurt them before they attack; even interceptor wouldn't be good enough.

However, they are only S6. possibly put the terminators into reserve (teleporting in) and put the centurions in the land raider? That way you know they're safe until they have a target. Even if he gets lucky and tazes the tank to death with electroshock grubs, you won't care - the odds of hurting a centurion are miniscule.

You can get 4 hyperious platforms, firing 4 twin-linked S8 AP3 with interceptor and skyfire for 140 points, as a fast attack (each is T6 W2 and 3+ armor).
Two or Three full units of those with some tasty ignore cover from a psycher, or even just help from an auspex will really threaten those big bugs.
A fire Raptor is another good choice, it shows up with enough firepower to be effective.

Heh, I'm the Tyranid player mentioned by op and these are what I've been suggesting alongside Sevrin Loth/Tigurius.

Space Marines are one of the few armies I don't play but Storm Talons seem good if you can counter deploy the Flyrants, TFCs get stuff off objectives and Loth/Tiggy with Cents seems like they would cause a lot of havoc.

FInally do something not exactly Marinesque and huge the Terrain, this will take alot of punch out of the assault threat even on the big bugs.

psyker with your cents

ignores cover, or anything that can give them twin linked will be useful.

twin linked gives the unit AA power, since rerolling 6's is the same as needing a 5 or 6, ie you have a 1/3 chance per shot to hit at that point, instead of 1 in 6.

I don't agree with stormtalons, because they have only 2 HP. Unless you use a lot of AA, the shots they put out will not kill a flying model due to jinking option, and the return fire will remove the stormtalon in 1 turn. Stormtalons are only good against flying tyrants if you can guarantee killing them.

things that ignore cover to take out venomthrope are good, like TFC. I think whirlwinds can also get an ignores cover shot.

if you like allies try GK, they have a purifier unit that has a nova ability that auto hits everything in range for a lot of hits, even flyers/swoopers. two units of them have a good chance to remove any flying tyrants in range in 1 go.

ADL with quad gun is useful. gives you cover and some interceptor/aa power.

check out snipers. they get good cover saves, and split into 2 units present some inexpensive targets that are a threat to MCs which you can setup after your opponent sets up their MCs usually, thanks to infiltrate.

The malantrhope shouldn't be able to cover everything with its cover save, as it only is 6" from the model to other nid models.

I think $wise the cheapest and most effective investment would be adding a librarin (or tig) to your grav cents.

You'de be surprised how much cover you can get from a roaming Malanthrope and a Venomthrope in a Bastion.
