Okay so I've been playing quite a few games at my local shop and I don't want to be TFG or a WAAC type player as I really like my gaming community but it's diverse - there are members who play quite challenging list and there are those who play only what they have and so sometimes I feel it gets a bit difficult to be able to play nice so to speak. I started the hobby almost three years ago and I went for the models I wanted to play and now I've got all of my armies situated basically how I want them - while I was building them I went for models I liked and also based how I build my list on survivability/durability and effect on the table. However I think that puts me into a certain category as I have many tools in my toolbox so I can build my list based on the armies my opponents are bringing. I don't like to think of it as list tailoring but for instance if I know my opponent is bringing Eldar I fear wave serpent/wraith spam so I might bring a Farsight Enclave Missile Commander Bomb(My "Orca" Enclave) to deal with jinking wave serpents and high toughness wraith models. I also have used this build against a couple other heavily armored list because it is effective and I'm not taking these against new players (although I did try out a new GK list the other day against a relatively new Tau player and he ended up conceeding before my turn two and I only had three units on the board - which makes me feel like a jerk but...it's tau, and he does have a decent selection in his army and I have had horrible experiences in the past against them and was merely experimenting with a list) but I don't want players to not want to play against me because other than how I play on the table top I get along with pretty much the entire group.
few examples of my other list (all at 2000 pts)
GK (Grey Knights w/ Assassin)
Tau ("Orca" Enclave)
Tyranids "Monster Mash"
Spoiler:

Hive Tyrant; Wings, ESG, 2 TL Devourers
Hive Tyrant; Wings, ESG, 2 TL Devourers
Venom
Venom
Zoanthrope x2
14 Hormagaunts
15 Hormagaunts
30x Termagants
Tervigon(Miasma Cannon, ESG/Dessicator Larvae)
Hive Crone
Hive Crone
Exocrine
Exocrine
Tyrannofex(Acid, ESG)

So basically I'm wondering - how do I build a list that is effective but not so "WAAC" or "mean" or...I don't know this is exceedingly difficult. It used to be easy when I was just starting but then I faced things like Mechcrons(wall of AV13) and Wraith based armies or back in sixth Commander Buffed Riptides and so I started building to face these types of elements. I want the game to be fun for both parties but I also don't want to get smashed either. Any recommendations? Discussion on this thought of playing "nice"?

Bring two lists. One that is your most competitive and one that is designed to lose to your opponent in style.
