Only if he also had deep strike (as the deep strike rule doesn't confer to the rest of the unit)

Only if he's equipped wit a Jump Pack or Wings that will allow him to Deep Strike as well.

Please, post about the results! I really want to see how warp talons fare with a lord. People tend to treat the guyz as one of the worst units in the dex on par with mutilators.

I use warp talons regularly with my chaos lord, all slaneesh, but I never deep strike them, just jump them up the board hugging cover, then assault something squishy.

5+ invul?

Want to use a unit that everyone says stinks, just to prove them wrong?

But they aren't wrong. Warp Talons suck, and are worse then raptors

Warp talons are only a few points more than raptors for an invul and ap3 weapons with shred. This is very good, unless you pay too much attention to netlists and powergamers.

If you really need to make then better, simply slap the unit with MOT and the grimore, suddenly they can have a 2+ invul. Not bad for a unit people claim is bad.

Sadly MoT can't improve your save beyond 3++ (and order of applying doesn't matter, as soon as your save goes beyond 3++ MoT stops applying)

A few? Warp Talons are almost double the cost of raptors. There is an entire 13 pt difference, that is a whole space marine in points. That is not a few.

Warp Talons also lose a ton of wargear and options with that 13 pt increase as well. Like Pistols, special weapon options, and grenades. Grenades is the huge one because that lets them swing at initiative when charging through terrain or S6 against against MCs and vehicles.

A Warp Talon's claws are sharp enough to cut through the fabric of reality, but incapable of cutting through some branches that are in the way of an assault.

They benefit from grimoire and Cursed earth, which is nice, but as long as they are so ridiculously expensive I doubt I will ever see them fielded.

On topic: as long as your lord also has the Deep Strike rule (jump pack/terminator armour) he can DS with them, but not otherwise.

Wow. That made me laugh harder than it should have.

Yes, they are 13 points more expensive than raptors. But, you pick up lightning claws and an invul save. You lose grenades and pistols. Not too terrible a trade off. Personally, I would still go with raptors however, but that is just me. I can't remember the rule exactly, but don't they cause blind checks when they arrive by deep strike? I would use them just to see if this rule actually does anything.

However, I fully support people trying to use units that people insist are terrible. It makes winning that much sweeter.

Their blind rule is awful as you have to have landed within 6" of a unit to use it and at that distance you're more likely to mishap and even if you do trigger it most units in the game have I4+ and will probably pass the blind check anyway leaving you right in front of enemy fire.

30 pts for a single MEQ wound is not good. Spending 13 points for just LCs and 5++ is not good. also losing their shooting attack and grenades is not good.

Losing assault grenades on an assault unit is huge. Not having them completely invalidated many quality assault units. Inqubi, banshees, genestealers ect

Here's an idea on how to run them: instead of a Chaos Lord, put them with a Sorcerer with biomancy. Try to get them endurance for FNP, Eternal Warrior and Relentless (not that that makes a huge difference).
