I'm confused as to whether Death from the Skies is generally allowed in tournament play?
I've seen a fair few TO packs and they don't seem to list them.

Are they considered a regular part of 40k or do they require special allowance?

Thanks in advance .

Well, since it's from a previous edition, it's questionable utility at best.

It got superceded by several codices, which again reduces its utility.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

It's updated in ( or will be updated) in the new Baal book.

Honestly, I doubt that they will have an actual issue with the balance of it, and in theory would support its use.......

but I highly doubt you will ever attend an RTT using its rules unless you specifically set something up. Simply for the fact that in the missions I doubt the TO will add the Flyer ace rule, or tell the people in advance. Since it is something that is necessary to know during list creation, I doubt it will be used often.

The only good ones are 3-6 on Daemons, and 5-6 on Tyranids anyways. Not worth the 35 points unless you are Daemons IMO, would be pretty cool on Weaver or Be'lakor though, assuming unique characters can become aces.

Aftermath can be calculated.

3-4 is also awesome for nids. 5 wounds on a Flyrant? Yeh please!

hard to read the print but I don't see anything on that page that states the fighter ace rules are optional rules. Given that its not in a core book they are probably listed as optional somewhere in the shield of baal book.

also from those rules it appears it no longer costs points to upgrade, but you may only select 1 model in your army to be a fighter ace and roll on the chart immediately after rolling on the warlord chart, unlike last edition where I think it was 50pts for each fighter ace.

It's free in missions where "Fighter Aces" is specified, per the Fighter Aces paragraph.
Otherwise, it's a 35 point upgrade, per the "Using Fighter Aces in Other Missions" paragraph.

I've not seen them allowed at any GTs yet, but if you ask the TO may allow the rules to be used.

I recently played in a local event that allowed the rules because it is a GW printed book. The special maneuvers were pretty awesome for my tank company with a vendetta.

Armies:
The Iron Waagh: 10,000+ 8th Edition Tournament Record: 4-7-1
Salamanders: 5,000 8th Edition Tournament Record: 4-2
Ultramarines: 4,000
Armored Battle Company (DKoK): 4000
Elysians: 500
Khorne Daemons: 2500

The new rules do specifically state for other missions so I hope they are included.

too good to miss out on for demons and nids.

Of course you haven't, because the rules haven't even been officially published yet. All we have is some leaked images of the book. Remember, there are two different products with the "death from the skies" name:

A 6th edition supplement that was printed in limited numbers and included truly awful (even by GW standards*) optional "dogfighting" rules which pretty much consisted of "instead of shooting normally play a game of rock/paper/scissors and see what happens". Thankfully these rules were explicitly not included as part of the standard game, and hardly anyone even considered using them. I don't remember seeing any tournaments that included them, and I suspect that quite a few TOs weren't even aware that the rules existed.

A 7th edition supplement that includes different rules for upgrading fighter aces. There's a reference to "fighter ace missions" which presumably include additional mission rules, but the book also explicitly states that you can pay to buy ace upgrades in any mission. These rules don't obviously suck, so it's possible that tournaments will include them. I doubt that the special missions will see much tournament use for the same reasons that other campaign book missions are ignored, but the ace upgrades will probably end up being one more of those legality things to argue about. TOs that play the game as-is as much as possible will include them, TOs that have extensive lists of all the things that are banned in their events will probably also ban this one.

*You know it's bad when GW suggests rolling dice to pick your maneuver, since there's no possible strategy involved.

Yea this thread is way premature and should be locked until the actual rules are released.

The book was officially released on saturday
I really hope these rules will make it into common and tournament play. They seem to be at least interesting and even playtested (for a gw product)

How is it premature? The rules have literally just been released this Saturday.

It's premature because you're asking for a general trend about a book that hasn't been out long enough for a general trend to be established. Wait until there have actually been a few tournaments since the release before asking about general trends. And if you need information about a specific event contact the TO directly and ask them if the book will be legal.

I'd almost feel bad if I was able to get that nasty Leaving the table option on my Flyrant in more than one game. What can you do to kill him? Vector Strikes... Anything else?

You've miss read my initial question. I was asking about death from the skies in general- including the older rules. The thread is also to provoke discussion as to how people feel about these being included in future tournements. There is no need to lock the thread!
