I love the look of the Bullgryn models but their uses and effectiveness seem limited for a large points cost. But I've recently discovered the 'Rampart Detachment' where you take a platoon squad and 2 5 man (min) squads of bullgryns and all three units gain 'Fearless', 'fear' and 'counter-attack'. Plus I hear they give +2 cover saves instead of 1. It's expensive but don't half make the Bullgryn wall a tempting option.

So I'm reconsidering the idea, so I'll ask the question again plus a new one?
How effective is a squad of Bullgryns, is a wall of 6-10 of them really worth the pts?
& What are your thoughts regarding the 'Rampart Detachment' and has anyone had any experience with it?

90% sure its not going to be worth it. but you can make it work i feel with a maxed out squad + Invisibility + priest.

though those things work great for anyone.

I guess another option is just to shove a few back field and hold objectives all day as they are quite meaty.

Bullgryns are served well by now being able to ride in Assault transports. Have you tried to use them this way?

Grotesques and Bullgryns are similar in their usage but Grotesques have an Instant Death melee weapon. Now comparisons on VALUE aside, they function very much alike. And so if its a GIVEN that you're using the Bullgryns anyways, there's now a few interesting choices.

The Space Wolf drop ship has a huge capacity from what I understand (16?) and would be an ideal ally.

The Land Raider, Storm Wold transport, Drop Pods, and Storm Ravens might all be used to transport a decent number of Bullgryns to the front. Certain Psyker powers can make them incredibly tough to kill.

So given the want to use them, Assault vehicles seem the obvious choice and the choices for that wet way up in number.

Have you tried this at all? Any rules that would stop you?

I dunno if you're going to be able to make a deathstar out of them. I've seen Ogryn stars work decently well because of the shooting saturation mixed with capable melee, but Bullgryns kind of lack that ability.

Personally I think their strength is as a mobile ADL for a shorter range LR tank, like the Punisher, especially an HQ LR.

For what, 120-150ish you can keep advancing and giving out a 3+ cover save to a tank with a camo net, which is pretty solid. They can also tie up infantry from assaulting the tanks as well.

They're also fairly hard to budge with small arms, so the enemy has to throw valuable high strength/low AP fire their way to get rid of them.

+1 to cover won't help much vs ignore cover or rear shots.

It is a bit pricey in points, but it sure is alot of fun.

Pask: Punisher w/ heavy bolter sponsons, dozer blade.
Punshier w/ heavy bloter sponsons, dozer blade.

Bullgryn squad: usually 5, slab shields, grenade gauntlet.

Dark Angel Librarian: Level 2 (telepathy), Power Field Generator.
Dark Angel Scouts: 5 with sniper rifles.

Keep the Librarian behind the Bullgryn, close enough to confer the invul save. Keep pask close to the librarian to give the Punisher a invul save.

Pricey, but fun in casual games. Nothing like 3+(4+), T5, W3 models your opponent has to deal with.

The Landing pad lets you start a StormWolf on the table, I think. Full compliment of Bullgryns. So there's that.

So the best way to use Bullgryns is with allies then? Shame cause my Guard's theme makes such allies impossible.

You can try to use them as a distraction unit , put a minimum squad in a fast chimera or other ig fast tank ( im not to familiar with ig ) and use them like orks use MANZ missle to distract your opponent with it! Or if they can fly in youre planes you can deploy them on some objektives to bully out some weak units out of there . I think ogryns are the best looking part of ig anyway so totally use them!!

that is a choice, but the game does provide for its use.

I can remember someone suggested this as a good use for Bullgryns even if it is just a bullet magnet...

Primaris psyker with Biomancy,
X3 Bullgryns,
Mounted in chimera

Throw it at the enemy so they're forced to deal it, as you can't ignore such a unit easily. Granted it's not suitable for competitive play but I think it might be fun to use in friendly to semi-competitive games.

The important part with MANZ missles is that, well, they're absurdly deadly.

120 points (155 if you count the trukk) that will put out 12 power klaw attacks on the charge. Seriously, leave those guys alone and they'll happily tear through gigantic blobs of basic troops, wreck entire squadrons of vehicles, rip holes in super-heavies, and seriously menace even the most elite of the elite (such as terminators).

Bullgryns don't have that kind of resume going for them.

Im pretty sure the slab shields confer a 4+ save not +1 to saves they have

So at best russ will be getting a 3+ with a net.
