I have the digital copy of the FE. Just want to know if I'm missing anything....
Here's my understanding:
Combined Arms or Allied Detachments may be created from the Farsight Enclaves Supplement providing that:
- At least one of the "Troops" choices is a unit of at least 3 Crisis Suits
- You do not include AunVa.
- You do not use signature systems listed in Codex: Tau Empire
So this would be an example of a LEGAL Farsight Allied Detachment:
No Slot
-Ovesa
HQ
-Farsight
TROOPS
-3x Crisis
ELITE
-Riptide
HEAVY
-No Choice

This list is not legal, O'vesa can only be taken if Farsight is your Warlord, and your Warlord can not belong to an Allied Detachment.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures. |

That list is not legal.
In order to take O'Vesa (or any member of the eight), Farsight must be your Warlord. If Farsight is in an Allied Detachment, he cannot be the Warlord.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Because the rules specifically say your Warlord cannot come from an Allied Detachment.

Yeah, my bad, do not bump submit when you still are still formatting a post.... Indeed, Throw some Kroot in there and it becomes a Combined Arm Detachment, as the Warlord restriction is only on an Allied Detachment you can now select Farsight as the Warlord.

Now it is legal (as long as Farsight is your Warlord).

One thing to remember as you're playing with Farsight Enclaves, is that while you can ally with Tau Empire as Battle Brothers, both Detachments would need to be Combined Arms Detachments. You can't have an Allied Detachment with the same Faction as your Primary Detachment. Farsight Enclaves and Codex: Tau Empire are both Faction Tau Empire. For some reason, lots of people get this wrong and think the permission in the Supplement to ally with Tau Empire means you can take an Allied Detachment. It doesn't. It's just a leftover from 6th edition and provides nothing in the environment of 7th edition where same Faction Detachments can ally as Battle Brothers normally.

Unless you're planning on taking this list to the LVO, which specifically allows you to ally with the same faction.

Well obviously, if you go to any tournament that house rules away RaW, you won't have to play RaW. Same with playing with your friends. We generally don't bring up tournaments in YMDC because they are essentially just a TO's HIWPI.

I mention it because I know he's going to the LVO with this list and I wanted him to know he could ally with the same faction at that tournament, which (unless you're looking at their FAQ) isn't obvious.

Wow. Just read the LVO FAQ. Doesn't even look like 7th edition at all. Also, whoever wrote it doesn't appear to understand the current books. They call Codex: Militarum Tempestus a Supplement. Legion of the Damned, too. It seems like a lot of these tournaments REALLY want 6th edition back.

One last Farsight question:
Do I HAVE to take Farsight or can I just take a commander as an HQ?

Farsight is not requires to run a Farsight Enclave list.
Farsight is required if you are running the 8.
