Subject: Alternative to hull points

After an armor heavy, marine on marine game the other day, my buddy an I came up with the following idea.
Instead of hull points we though it would be interesting if a glance or a pen dropped the armor value of the facing it hit by one. We though that this would better represent battle damage and would add a new tactical layer to the game. If your raider takes a barrage of crack missiles to one side and suffers two glancing hits you now better keep that AV 12 side of your raider away from the enemy. You couldn't technically 'glance a unit to death' anymore but every glance dramatically increases the likelihood of a pen.
The only downside we came up with was the increased recordkeeping. Any thoughts?

And that the only way to kill a vehicle would be with AP2+ weapons.

Either going back to 5th ed style vehicle damage or keeping Hull Points but ditching Glances would work best I think.

It's an interesting idea. However, it could be abusive with the current vehicle movement rules.
You've made a landraider's front av12. Now it side-slides at you with it's av14 side. Than it side-slides at you with it's other av14 side. Than it turns at you with it's back which is luckilly av14 again. A cow landraider on ice.
And than how would barrage work if a vehicle has different side armor values? And what side will get reduced AV? Automatically Appended Next Post: Even without it. To kill a rhino, you'll need 11 glances/pens. Yep, it's gona be easier and easier to glance them over time. But that's still a hell lot of absorbed firepower by a 35 pt vehicle.

I actually forgot about the specific mechanics of the current 7th edition damage table, the fact you need AP 2 to actually get a wreck. So yes, you would have to go to a more aggressive damage table, or turn a second immobilized result into wreck result.
As what side gets reduced, its what ever facing takes the hit, just gets noted down on the army roster.

What might work is dropping the armour value of every facing on a hit.
My own system I'm working on is to have vehicles not wreck when losing all hull points but instead for all glances to become penetrating hits on a vehicle with 0 hull points. Also any damage table results above crew stunned results in a wreck when at 0 HP.
Here's my modified damage table to go with it.
1-2. Crew Stunned
3. Crew Shaken
4. Weapon Destroyed
5. Immobilized
6. Wrecked
7. Explodes
AP1 is +1 on the damage table
