Everyone has their favorite army, aka their main army. What is your alt army? Do you play it separately? Do you run it as an ally?
For me, dark angels. Despite loving Chaos Daemons, I hold a special place in my heart for these dudes. Maybe because they're one of the few non-Wardian chapters left, IDK. But I still like them, and have an 1000 points list for them. I suppose Chaos Space Marines counts, but I only run them as allies, and very rarely.

My main army is Eldar and it will always be.
However, as this army is a bit too powerful atm I've shelved it
and play Necrons in apoc battles and GK in local tournaments.

I am getting started on building a Blood Angels alternate army. Keeping my Crimson Fists as my primary army though.

For the time being, I kind of have two main armies: Necrons and Tyranids. Necrons were my first army, and what drew me to the game, but Tyranids are currently taking over.

But I have a smallish CSM Tzeentch army (and sometimes I play with my friend's CSM Nurgle army). I wanted to have a PA Army, and CSM appealed to me more than Imperials.

I don't run allies, so I play these guys by themselves.

Eldar/Dark Eldar Allies, Ultramarines and soon to be Blood Angels. But since my Blood Angel purchases aren't going to be many, Inquisition follows very soon after that.

My main army is my Salamanders, so between Eldar, Tyranid and Ork, I would say Orks are my alt even though I'm further ahead with my Nid army. It's not that I don't like the nids, in fact I really like them, it's just, well, Orks

I count Chaos as one army since I play both daemons and CSM pretty equally and often ally them with each other. That leaves Sisters for my "altarnate" army.

My main army is my Salamanders. Alternate is a very fluffy Eldar 2000 point build, that is a close replica of the army Lord Maugan Ra lead when bringing his craftworld out of the Warp. Not OP, just the exact eldar army I field for fun.

Makes me all warm and fluf... fuzzy inside.

My main army is usually the one I happen till be working on, but with so many armies and such great and free force selection rules, I struggle to think of the last time I played a game with only one force on the table.

Main is Alpha Legion, using either CSM, SM+IG or IAXIII. Alt is Arkhan Confederates, IG.

As it stands, my main army is IG, with DE and Necrons as my alternate armies.

If I could, I'd join a Haemonculus to a squad of 'augmented' guardsmen for a bit of fun. But, despite all the freedom the game boasts, I'm still not allowed to do that.

So, no, I don't use my armies together.

Main = IG.
Main Alt = Necron (standalone, not allied)

iwhoops, that was supposed to be Imperial Knights.

I also have multiple alts, it would have been better to put checkboxes instead of radio buttons (if at all possible.)

I selected Dark eldars since it is the one I am currently working on and really like what I build, paint and play.

My main army is Space Marines (about 7000-8000pts of models)

My alts are :
-Orks (Pretty sizable collection, my first alt army I started so it has the most models for alts). Have about 4000pts of models
-Eldar (Also shelved due to the fact that it is too powerful and I play in a friendly environement. Have about 3000pts of models)
-Dark Eldar (I am currently buying and building only what I will use in a list. I do not intend to own everything. Have about 1500pts of models for the moment but I still need a bit more to complete a 2000pts list)
-Blood angels, dark angels which I play with my core space marines army.

Future interests:
-Astra Militarum
-Chaos deamons

Well clearly I struggle at picking armies (see sig, models for practically all of them).

My favorite armies are SM, 30K IH, and CSM respectively, but I use IG, Inquisition, Daemon, and other allies liberally.

Main army is the Death Korps, alt is the Tempestus Scion.

Salamanders. They were my first and primary, but I haven't played them since 7th dropped, and my DE surpassed them in points sometime during the summer.

I'm very slowly building a Dark Angel DeathWing.
As much as possible, I'm trying to use ONLY Terminators, Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders. The Heavy Stuff.
I'm sure its not a tournament-winner, but it's a nice change from my green-tide!
My basic story is that the (sub)Chapter has been through some horrific war/warp/hardship and only the Heavy Stuff survived.
Maybe there was a gene-plague, and although the armoury is full, there are few Marines left to use it, and those that have survived have also gained enough Honour to use The Heavy Stuff.

Built so far:
Belial
3x5 Terminator squads
2 dreadnoughts
2 Land Raiders

Imperial Guard, no matter what I have always had an Imperial Guard army since 4th edition when I really started playing. I have always loved the idea of being the regular human soldier forced to face horrible aliens, warp induced psykers and evil super genetically engineered warriors with nothing but a lasgun! Have played/owned Cadians, Steel Legion, Elysians and probably soon Death Korps of Krieg as my new Imperial Guard army. Have always had one and always will. I generally construct all my IG armies around fluff based lists, definitely meant for more fun/casual gameplay then the tournament scene, however they are still pretty strong lists.

My alternate army that I plan on keeping around will be my Farsight Enclave pure Battlesuit army as I love the fluff of the Farsight Enclaves, the look of a pure battlesuit army and gives me a pretty strong list to deal with almost anything. This army will be for when I come across those WAAC style gamers, really competitive tournaments or when I just want to throw down with my best against someone else's best. However the look of the army is what I am loving the most, I am ONLY taking the bigger suits in this list, meaning:

-Crisis Suits
-Broadsides
-Riptides

Have to say it definitely a sexy looking army when I put it on the table-top.

Currently, my main army is guard.
My "alt" armies consist of grey knights, inquisition, space marines and imperial knights. All share heavily in terms of iconography and colors with my guard so that they all look good together when added in as allies or whatnot.

I chose Chaos Space Marines as my alternate army. Which is a little weird in my situation as after moving across the country, my original armies - CSM and Necrons - disappeared. Then I started back up not too long ago solely focusing on Chaos Space Marines. However, CSM has always been my for fun army. One day, I'll start back up on my Necrons, my competitive army. Still "fun" but the one I actually pull out since the Oldcron dex when in a more serious setting.

I started with Tyranids and will always consider them to be "my army", even though I have been collecting Chaos Space Marines longer than Tyranids, and own quite a lot more CSM than Tyranids.

It happened mid-5th, when the price of Battleforces was about to go up substantially and there was a minor "pre-price-hike" discount, for some reason, on a few of them on an online retailer. I bought the CSM one, already being interested in them. The only element of that box that I actually use now is the Rhino, having discovered a distaste for the CSM models for various reasons. I used the Berserkers once, and Possessed are Possessed.

Now, though, I have a large collection of power armour models (many of them Forge World), Daemon Engines, and more. Eventually I'll have a Titan.

I also have very minor Eldar and Tau armies along with a single Knight, but I got those purely for the models and have yet to play with them, not that I get much choice in the matter.

Chaos Space Marines here. I got 1200 point force free from a friend of mine. They will go just fine with my IG force. I have not decided yet to make them stand alone or use them as allies. I just might make them primary, then ally in IG as allies.

Sisters of Battle is my main army. I'd've started them the better part of a decade sooner, but the reason for waiting was two-fold. First, a squad of Battle Sisters was 15 dollars more expensive than a Tactical Squad (back during the 50 dollar boxes of Sisters thing). Second, I was still in my early-to-mid teens, so playing the female army was something I was still a bit apprehensive/embarrassed about doing. Time passed, and that 15 dollar gap closed to 5 dollars as the price of a Tactical Squad went up and the price of a Sisters Squad didn't, and as I aged, I got more comfortable about playing female characters and armies. Also, I could afford more as my allowance had gone up, to be replaced by social assistance when I got old enough (medical disability, if you were wondering).

So then eventually my previous main army, vanilla Space Marines, became my alternate army, as my collection of Sisters of Battle grew. A very good friend of mine on the Internet enjoys Space Marines, and together we did some roleplaying sessions over several years where we built up the background of my Sisters of Battle and his Space Marines, along with the planet they both call home. I still like to include them in my army as allies.

I also have decent collections of Orks, Imperial Guard, Eldar, and some Chaos (both SM and Daemons), Tau, Tyranids, and Space Wolves.

Initially, i wanted to run CSM. But than i accidentally 4-th ed ork codex.
So, CSM are an alt now.
