Tbf, the good Friday agreement was in 98, 3 years previously, but 9/11 basically put the idea of armed struggle in Ireland in cryogenic stasis due to worldwide public opinion, especially in the US.
I'm not sure how much support any new republican offshoot from the PIRA or RIRA could possibly get in the US now. Money for the "boys back home" would be a little thin on the ground, but give it time, that could change again.

I used 9/11 as it basically and pretty much instantly cut the idea of American money off. Plus all the new laws regarding terror and terror offences in place. Modern groups have kept the threat high and the idea of backing it unpopular.
You cannot do what they did without funds to bribe, purchase, and operate.

One last thing bugging me about McGuinness. When he found out he was dying, why didn't he agree to disclose all of his past, to give people some closure? Now they'll never know.

Westminster Station is in lockdown.
Hope this doesn't interfere with tonight's commute home.
What idiot attacks parlinent. Its guarded by armed police and probbly more quietly by not police dressed as such...

I'm watching the news at a doctor's office... things are buttoned down pretty tight now.
Hope ya'll are safe and the perp is captured.
Seems at least one has been shot - but it's not at all clear if there was just one assailant.
And in true British spirit, I'm trying to figure out whether to leave work on time and hope my coach home isn't delayed, or stay in the warm with a nice cup of tea for a bit.

And I must aplaud. Your commitment to the mug of tea dispute any events. Tea will be served in response to a problem be it invading Germans or a lost set of keys.

They are already talking about a terror attack.
Two attackers, one with a car on Westminster Bridge, and the other on foot trying to get into the Parliament. The latter seems dead, the other escaped.
Reportedly, one dead. Sad day for Europe.

I haven't heard about there being two. Where'd you read that?
As far as I've read, the car approached Westminster, ran over a bunch of people, the guy jumped out and knifed a policeman. He then went after another who'd alerted armed police, they told him to drop, he carried on, and they shot him.
Meanwhile, they've found a suspicious package in the car and called in the bomb squad. That would imply that he was probably hoping to suicide bomb using the car, and it didn't go off for whatever reason, leaving him forced to resort to attacking with a knife. It would make sense, as not even nutters are usually dumb enough to try and attack the seat of power in a country armed solely with a kitchen implement.

No information on the motive at this time. It's currently undergoing a counter-terrorism investigation, and will be treated as a terrorist attack until more is known.
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Scratch my last post, BBC says that multiple eyewitnesses confirm two in the car. In other words, one of them is still at large. Hopefully they'll net the fecker soon, he should be on enough CCTV in that part of London to identify him.
Mark Rowley, assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said the police were "satisfied at this stage it looks like there was only one attacker".
The man believed to be the attacker is dead, he said.
Four people have died and at least 20 people were injured in the attack.
"Our strength as the city depends on our ability to stand together at such a terrible time," he said.
