So my uni is going to be hosting a Humans vs Zombies game in the new year. All I know is that humans get Nerf guns to defend themselves with, and that the game will be taking place over a week across campus and some of the surrounding area. There will also be some sort of special event for survivors at the end of the week, but I don't know what that will entail precisely.

Basically, what kind of Nerf gun on the market would be best suited to this kind of game? I imagine something light in a run 'n gun type of scenario. Ca anyone throw some options out there for me? Has anyone done something similar to Humans V Zombies? Anyone got any basic Nerf newbie tips?

Thanks in advance Dakka

Nerf guns have come a long way since the single shot, muzzle loaded ones of my youth. You are going to want something motorized, so none of that cock between shots BS. Clip fed, so you can just slap in a new one when you run dry. And plenty of spare clips and ammo.

You are probably going to want a single shot hold out as well, just in case.

They made a machine gun one. Just gets lots of repacks for ammo not matter what gun you get..

Light, easy to load and most importantly durable. You don't want to trip or drop it and it's broke. I forget the name but there's a pistol style that has a magazine, so it holds a few rounds. Best of all it fires round foam discs. My nephew had it and that thing was really accurate and could shoot really far since the disc spins like a Frisbee!

Find one of those and you'll have a 1 up over your competition

I've played two games of humans vs. zombies at my university when I and two friends attended. First thing I would do is make sure whatever nerf gun you bring is in accordance with the rules of your uni's game. Some schools do a very RPG like game where you start out with crappy weapons and as the game goes on you are allowed to upgrade to the big guns as you scavenge and complete missions. Second, I would look at the scenarios in which you believe you'll be encountering zombies and the layout of your school. Usually, there are rules that once you are inside you are "safe" from zombies. If there are a lot of wide open spaces you have to cross, I would consider just going for a simple nerf pistol or something small that won't slow you down. Most times, in my experience, zombies travel in packs so it's hard to take them down even with a fully automatic, belt or drum fed nerf machine gun.

If you are just going to class on your own and not going to some event, I would stick with a small pistol like the Nerf Maverick. It's a 6 shot revolver that has decent accuracy and decent range and holds a lot of darts before you need to reload (for a pistol). An upgrade to that would be the Nerf Barricade. It's a battery-operated 10-shot semi-automatic type that requires 3 AA batteries. This one, in my experience, jams more frequently than the Maverick but also fires more quickly (especially on the run).

If you are specifically going zombie hunting, or playing an organized mission, then you have the perfect opportunity to bring out the bigger guns. My uni ran most of their missions at night when classes were not in session. This brings larger hordes of zombies but also allows humans to team up. If you are looking to spend some money, the Stampede is my personal favorite (and what I used in my human vs. zombie missions). Fully automatic assault rifle with a standard 18 round clip (I used the 30 round drum barrel from a separate purchase). This thing is heavy and awkward enough that you may have trouble maneuvering with it. HOWEVER, it really pumps out the rounds. Range isn't great but I feel it is one of the only truly offensive nerf guns the humans get. By offensive type gun, I mean one that, with proper backup, you can actually charge the zombies. The N-strike Rampage is a pump action shot gun with a… I think it's a 15 shot drum but it's been a while. That's a good balance between the heaviness and awkwardness of the Stampede and the limitations of the pistols.

Hope you're up for some cardio training. I ran ALOT in my games of human vs. zombies and it was some of the most fun I had at college. It turns your morning commute to class into an adventure. Good luck.

I am a big fan of the Longstrike, the new version is nice as well. A drum feed will help... 18 round magazines, failing that. The new Mega Centurion looks neat too, but maybe too heavy, and has limited ammunition.

Carry a sidearm, or two. The revolver would be good for a backup.

Have fun!

Based on the fact that you called it Humans V Zombies, and I'm not aware of many other societies that specifically do zombie games, I'm guessing you go to either York or Lancaster?

Either way, if it's one of the normal week-long games, I would recommend either the Strongarm or the Hammershot (or the Rebelle equivalent, as it's technically superior), as they're easy to conceal, and small enough to use easily.

For the end of game event, a Strongarm is useful again, though most people go for something larger, like a Retaliator, Stockade or Roughcut.

One of the all in one ones. Can switch it as needed from a pistol to a rifle. Or get a rifle one and mod it for sniping.

Ok, I picked up a Jolt and a Strongarm today, but I can't help but feel like I need something a bit bigger to round it off. I was thinking either a Retaliator or the Rapidstrike, is one strictly better than the other? Is there something else I should be considering instead/as well?

I love my Retaliator. It's one of the best pistols out there.

If your serious about this take a look here: http://www.orangemodworks.com/

They sell Nerf gun upgrades and mods. Entirely unofficial so be warned, they'll make those suckers HURT.

A few years back during office wars, I found the N-Strike CS-6 handy, especially since it broke down to a pistol and had magazines, which you can get extras of. I think tehre is an updated version of this. Always go with something with an analog firing mechanism, just in case. The N-Strike Maverick is a reliable hold out nerf gun....

If you're just likely to class all on your own and never planning to several occasion, I might stick with a tiny gun such as the Nerf Maverick.

I've only got two nerf guns.

Both are N-strike EBF25s. One in clear, one in traditional yellow/orange.

Only ones I ever needed.

Cheers, I'll make sure to check those out as well.

I'm actually at the university of Winchester, it's the first time we're doing it. If it goes well, we could be onto a regular thing here

Oh yeah, am I going to need to buy a load of ammo, or is the stuff you get with the guns going to last long enough?

I've always been a fan of using a simple pistol. Magazine fed Nerf guns are somewhat inaccurate and they tend to Jam. That said, I'd also get the Nerf Raider or whatever the updated one is called. That thing can spray out some serious dakka and can accept a wide variety of magazine.

Most neft guns are sold with one full load of ammo, for those that have a capacity. Or just a few spares if not (IIRC). You are going to want more. If only to replace the ones you shoot and can’t find afterwards.
