So I was playing a game with my sm vs DE. The game was fun blah blah blah but something I let go and didn't know about but didn't care to challenge the situation, was just taking just a court for an hq choice and choosing the 10-50 point hq in there (or whatever it is). Can you do this in a legal bound list in a CAD? It doesn't seem right as you have to have an archon but it does have the little skull mark for an hq choice. Plus an archon makes them not take up an HQ choice but because he's not present the rule isn't in effect. Then he made his warlord one of the warriors upgraded veteran sarge equivilent. Can he do this? It just seems weird but idk just wondering what you guys think or know about warlords and HQ's in this codex for DE and bound CAD's. Thanks in advance!

Perfectly legal, but contentious.

It is a valid hq choice. The rules for warlords is then clear that you can choose any character you wish

Perfectly legal, but as Nos said, some people will be convinced that it's not. My take on this is that people are stuck in 6th edition where it most likely would have been illegal. With current 7th Edition rules, it's totally ok.

As another point of interest, it's perfectly legal to take a lone, 25 point Ordo Xenos Inquisitor in an Inquisitorial Detachment (1-2 HQs, 0-3 Elites) and make him your Warlord. Then keep him in Reserves for as long as possible to retain your Slay the Warlord point. Ignore him for the rest of your army.

The majority of respondents here felt the rules support taking a Court sans Archon.

Of course, the court can't be your warlord, can it? It isn't a character. Unless you have no characters, the one of them can be the warlord, but gets no warlord traits.
